Saints rookie cools Warriors

Maybe it was the fact that the weather was cold outside. Or maybe it was because the heat was never turned on in the Coliseum all weekend, making it feel even colder inside than out. Or a really good goaltending performance.

Either way, the Wayne State Warrior (1-5-0, 1-1-0 CHA) offense was in hibernation as they were blanked by St. Lawrence Saints, 4-0, in non-conference action at the Coliseum on Saturday night.

After heating up by scoring 8 goals in their win at Huntsville last Saturday night, the Warriors scored just once on 46 shots in the two game set against Sacred Heart and St. Lawrence this weekend.

The Warriors power-play was also ice cold as they went 0-6 against the Saints and concluded the weekend with a frigid 0-10 showing with the man advantage.

The Saints were coming off a tough 5-3 loss at Michigan State the night before, but looked hot against the Warriors.

After the Warriors successfully killed off a power-play, the Saints got on the board first at 14:46 of the first period when Mike McKenzie knocked in a rebound of a shot by defenseman Jared Ross.

Wayne State freshman goaltender Brett Bothwell, making his first home start, held off the Saints attack for approximately the next 30 minutes.

The Saints finally started to find some holes late in the contest as Charlie Giffin scored at 6:02 and Ross scored his fourth of the year on the power-play at 9:24 of the third period to put the Saints up 3-0.

"I struggled with my rebounds tonight," said Bothwell. "I was leaving a lot there so they had a lot to whack at. You can't get down for too long though, just keep working hard. I just want to get some wins for this team."

Alex Curran added a late goal as the Saints captured a 4-0 victory.

Freshman Alex Petizian was perfect in net for the Saints, making 26 saves in his first career start.

Wayne State will now begin a 7-game road trip, starting next weekend with a single game against the Western Michigan Broncos in Kalamazoo.

The trip will be a homecoming for Warriors head coach Bill Wilkinson who coached at Western for 17 seasons.

"We're excited to play CCHA competition," said Wilkinson. "It'll be a fun event too. You know there will be a lot of screaming fans when you go into Lawson. It's a tough environment to play in and I've never experienced it from the other side."

Wildcats split with Buckeyes

The Northern Michigan Wildcats (4-3-1, 1-1-0 CCHA) started the CCHA season with a split at home against Ohio State over the weekend.

The Wildcats began the two-game series with a 2-0 shutout over the Buckeyes on Friday for their fifth straight win in a conference opener.

Nick Sirota and Darin Olver scored and Bill Zaniboni made 22 stops as the 'Cats won their fourth in a row.

Saturday night did not go as well as the Buckeyes doubled up the Wildcats 4-2 at the Berry Events Center.

The 'Cats spotted the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead before Mike Santorelli and Blake Cosgrove scored back-to-back goals in third to cut the visitor's lead to 1.

The Buckeyes added an empty net goal with four seconds left to seal the win.

Zaniboni started between the pipes for the Wildcats and was 28 of 31. Brian Stewart came in in relief early in the third period and stopped all 7 shots he faced.

The Wildcats will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games in Oxford, OH against the Miami RedHawks.

Sacred Heart comes from behind to beat Wayne State

Article by Matt Mackinder / Courtesy USCHO.com

Wayne State took a 1-0 lead into the last half of the third period against Sacred Heart Friday night, but surrendered two late goals and lost, 2-1, before 469 fans at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Making the game all the more frustrating for Wayne State was the temperature inside the Coliseum. The heat was apparently turned off and the locker rooms had to be warmed with space heaters.

In any event, David Jarman's first collegiate goal proved to be the winner as the fourth liner crashed the net and knocked home a rebound at 15:32 of the third period.

"We do a lot of the dirty work on the fourth line," said Jarman, clutching the puck. "(Peter) Ferraro put a shot on net and it went off the goalie and I was there for the rebound. Definitely my biggest goal I've ever scored. They get more special each level you move up."

Broncos get on commitment bandwagon

Next year's CCHA schedule could well read like a Traverse City North Stars reunion tour.

With Stars captain Patrick Nagorsen (above) committing to Western Michigan University this week, he joins former North Stars Steven Oleksy and Eric Elmblad, who are already at Lake Superior State and Michigan, respectively, in what could be a four-sided Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivalry in 2007-08.

Current North Stars forward Kory Kaunisto is committed to Northern Michigan, but could also opt for another year of junior hockey before heading to Marquette.

Ferris State and Western each take one

Recap by Bob Hendrickson

The Ferris State Bulldogs' bid for a seventh straight win in their series with the Western Michigan Broncos fell short Saturday night as the Broncos skated to a 5-3 win at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 after the first period and never got closer than one goal as the Broncos tallied two more in the second period. Ferris got goals from forwards Matt Frank and Adam Miller, and a late third-period goal from defenseman Joe Van Culin, but an empty-netter by the Broncos' Paul Szczechura put the game out of reach.

Goals by freshmen Casey Haines and Cody Chupp led the Bulldogs to a 2-1 win in the first game of the home and home series Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo.

Haines scored at the 4:22 mark of the first period and Chupp at 5:48 of the second period with sophomore J. T. Dahlinger assisting on both goals to spot the Bulldogs a two-goal lead. Western cut the deficit to one on a Chris Frank goal at 14:23 of the second, but the closely-played third period was scoreless.

Ferris State goaltender Mitch O'Keefe stopped 25 of 26 shots on the night, while Dan Bellissimo saved 24 shots for WMU.

Ferris State (3-3-0, 1-1-0 CCHA) heads for Alaska this coming weekend to take on the Nanooks before beginning a four-game November stretch against Michigan State and Michigan.

Western Michigan (2-2-0, 2-2-0 CCHA) will travel to the Qwest Center for a pair of games against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.

NMU gets '07-08 commitment, leadership

The USHL's Tri-City Storm have announced that forward and team captain Mario Lamoureux has committed to play college hockey at Northern Michigan University.

The 18-year-old Lamoureux, a third-year Storm player, will join the Wildcats for the 2007-08 season. He has played in 120 games during a Storm career that began during the 2004-05 season. In those games, he has scored 21 goals and added 34 assists for 55 points and has 205 penalty minutes. This season he has a goal in four games.

"Mario is one of our most experienced players and still one of the youngest on our team," said Storm coach-GM Bliss Littler. "He has many roles for us and this year, as well as last, he has been one of our leaders. Northern Michigan is getting a very good hockey player and an outstanding kid."

Wolverines split with Miami

Michigan settled for a split last weekend against defending CCHA regular-season champion Miami at Yost Ice Arena.

Thursday night, down 1-0 after 20 minutes, the Wolverines scored three goals in the second period and added three more in the third for a 6-3 victory over the RedHawks in the CCHA opener for both teams.

Chad Kolarik (pictured) registered a hat trick for the second straight game, while David Rohlfs chipped in a goal and assisted on Kevin Porter's go-ahead tally that put Michigan in the lead for good at 3-2.

"I think (the puck) hit the inside of the post," said Kolarik of his third goal. "(Andrew) Cogliano made a nice play. I can't believe I got (a hat trick) two nights in a row. My parents were here tonight, and it was the first time they have ever seen me get a hat trick. I actually want to take (that last goal) back. I wanted to pass it to T.J. (Hensick) there. I felt pretty selfish to take it all the way by myself. Hensick was ahead of me and I should have passed it. I said I was sorry, (but) I think he is a little upset with me."

Cogliano also scored for U-M and Billy Sauer made 22 saves in goal.

Michigan was held scoreless until late in the third period, while Miami scored a power-play goal and two shorthanded tallies in a 4-1 loss Friday night.

Jack Johnson's tally at 18:25 of the third period avoided the shutout.

"We all have to take responsibility for tonight," said U-M head coach Red Berenson. "Working: it's not a gift, it's not a skill, it's an expectation from everyone. We got outworked from the start of the game to the end of the game and in every department. Were we close, well, there were times we could have gotten back in the game. Porter missed an open net when it was 1-0, and we could have tied the game, and maybe, maybe, maybe. But it wasn't our night."

Sauer finished with 27 stops.

Michigan will face non-conference opponent Northeastern on Friday and Saturday in Ann Arbor. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:35 pm. Saturday's game will be televised by Comcast Local.

Wildcats overrun Stampede

The Northern Michigan Wildcats (3-2-1, 1-1-1 CCHA) traveled to Omaha over the weekend and came home with the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Championship.

It wasn't easy though as the Cats had a tough battle in their opener, beating the UMass-Lowell River Hawks 2-1.

The Hawks started the action with a Jason Bergeron power play goal near the midway point of the opening period.

Matt Siddall scored his second of the season for NMU at 17:48 and the two teams left the ice after one period with a 1-1 tie.

Siddall also assisted on Mike Santorelli's eventual game winner on the pp at 10:31 of the second period.

Bill Zaniboni did the job from there, stopping 21 total shots in net for the win.

The late Friday game at the Stampede wasn’t even close as the host Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks trampled the Niagara Purple Eagles, 10-1, setting up an all CCHA title match.

The game proved to be not much of a match at all as the Wildcats beat up the Mavericks, 5-2.

The Wildcats started hot in the finale by going up 3-0 by the 7:03 mark of the second period.

That was all Zamiboni needed as he turned away 27 of 29 shots for his third consecutive win between the pipes.

Santorelli powered the Cats again with two goals and three assists and was named tourney MVP.

Joining Santorelli on the all-tournament team along with teammate's goaltender Bill Zaniboni, defensemen Nick Zach Tarkir and forward Matt Siddall.

The Wildcats return to Marquette next weekend to host the Ohio State Buckeyes in a pair at the Berry Events Center.

Oakland upends Buffalo Friday night

Oakland University never trailed in a 4-2 victory over the University at Buffalo Bulls Friday night.

Will McMahon (shorthanded) and Kyle DeMaggio led the Grizzlies with a goal and an assist each. Brent Cooper and Scott Kalinowski turned in the other two goals for the Grizzlies, who improved to 6-2-1 and are unbeaten in their last five. Freshman goaltender Collin Chase turned aside 25 Bulls' shots.

"We are progressing every week and getting better each game," stated head coach Sean Hogan. "The key is to take it one game at a time and focus on improving."

"Every game we are trying to eliminate mistakes until we are playing our best hockey at the end of the year," commented assistant coach Jeremy Bachusz. "I like the direction we are heading."

The Grizzlies will travel to Ames, Iowa, to take on No. 5 Iowa State University in two games this weekend. It will be the first matchup between the two teams.

News and Notes: McMahon scored a shorthanded goal for the scond straight game...Oakland University is currently ranked No. 10 in the most recent ACHA Division I poll. The top 16 teams at the end of the season will compete in the National Tournament in Youngstown, Ohio.

Warriors split down south

The Wayne State Warriors (1-3-0, 1-1-1 CHA) closed out their season opening, four-game road trip on a high note as they split a two game set with the Alabama Huntsville Chargers at the Von Braun Center.

Friday night the Chargers scored all their goals with the man advantage en route to 4-2 victory.

Shaun Arvai, Brett McConnachie, Grant Selinger, and Matt Sweazey scored for the Chargers who won for the first time in five games this season.

Seniors Jason Bloomingburg and Nate Higgins (pictured) scored for the Warriors and Will Hooper turned away 29 of 33 shots in net.

Jordan Erickson stopped 24 of 26 for UAH.

Saturday's night the Warriors grabbed their first win of the year as they outlasted the Chargers in a shootout, 8-6.

UAH led 2-1 after twenty minutes, but the Warriors ripped off five unanswered goals in the second period to take a 6-3 lead.

The Chargers tied the game with 3 goals to start the third, but Nate Higgins notched the hat trick at 17:06 for the eventual game winner.

Derek Bachynski added an empty netter and the Warriors skated out of Huntsville with an important early season conference victory.

Mike Forgie, Matt Krug, Jared Katz, Mark Nebus also scored for the green and gold.

Selinger and McConnachie led the Chargers with two goals each.

Freshman Brett Bothwell got the win in his second collegiate start, stopping 53 of 59 shots. In two games this year, Bothwell has been bombarded with 109 shots on goal.

Marc Narduzzi started between the pipes for the home team, was pulled in favor of Erickson in the second period, and then replaced after Erickson gave up 3 goals on five shots.

WSU and UAH both finished the night 3-for-9 on the power play.

Wayne State comes back the State Fair Coliseum next weekend for their first home games of the year. Friday night the Warriors host Atlantic Hockey's Sacred Heart Pioneers and Saturday the ECAC's St. Lawrence Saints take the ice.

Warriors earn first win of the season with OT victory

Wayne State split their weekend series with Rensselaer. A loss on Friday and an overtime win on Saturday improved the Warriors' record to 1-3-0.

Friday night, freshman Chelsea Burnett scored her first collegiate goal at 11:00 of the second period. Burnett's goal, assisted by Laura Monk and Tegan Schroeder, gave the Warriors a temporary 1-0 lead. The Engineers then scored two unanswered goals and added a third when Warrior goalie Valery Turcotte was pulled with just over a minute left in the final period. Turcotte finished with 17 saves.

Wayne State outshot Rensselaer, 24-12, and dominated on faceoffs, winning 42 to their host's 20.

Saturday's game started in a similar fashion to Friday's. Sophomore Melissa Boal (pictured) scored an unassisted goal early in the first to get Wayne out to a 1-0 lead, but RPI responded with two straight tallies.

It wasn't until a Warrior power play in the third period that Wayne State could even the score. The tying goal came from sophomore defenseman Tina Vanderhoeven, with help from sophomore Sam Poyton and junior Danielle Wilson. RPI outshot Wayne State, 10-5, in the final period, but Turcotte remained solid to send the Warriors to overtime.

Boal scored her second unassisted goal of the night at 2:38 of the extra period to seal the Warriors' first win of the season.

Turcotte finished Saturday's game with 31 saves.

The Warriors are on the road again next weekend. They will face Connecticut before returning to Detroit for their home opener against Cornell the following weekend.

Huskies break out the brooms

Michigan Tech went into nationally-ranked Vermont’s house and came out with four points. The Huskies stunned the Catamounts and moved to 3-1-0 on the year, the best record for the Huskies since the 1996-1997 season.

On Friday night, it was senior captain Lars Helminen who put in the game winner 39 seconds into overtime.

MTU had to overcome a two-goal deficit twice to force overtime. Vermont started the scoring, getting one past Michael Lee Teslak in the first. They went up by two for the first time in the second, but it was Geoff Kinrade who got the first goal and pulled MTU to within one. Still in the second, Vermont notched their third of the game, giving them a two-goal lead again. Just 30 seconds later, Tyler Shelast was able to bring it back to within one.

The third period started with Tech down, 3-2, but five minutes in, freshman Eli Vlaisavljevich tied the game. That was the last goal scored until Helminen notched the game winner.

Teslak improved to 2-0 on the season, and had 15 saves on the night.

Saturday was a different story as it was MTU who had the two-goal lead. This time, Vermont was unable to even the score. MTU started the scoring in the second, when freshman Phil Axtell tipped home the first power-play goal of the year for the Huskies. In the same period, junior Peter Rouleau recorded his first goal of the year and as a Husky and gave MTU the 2-0 lead.

Vermont made a game of it with a 6-on-4 goal 17 minutes in past Rob Nolan (pictured right), but Nolan and the defense stayed strong the rest of the way and preserved the win.

The win was Nolan's first collegiate win. He ended with 28 saves.

Michigan Tech now has eight total goals scored by eight different people. Sixteen different players on the roster have a point or more.

Michigan Tech returns home for the first WCHA series this upcoming weekend against Alaska-Anchorage.

LSSU manages split at Clarkson

Strong special teams play by Lake Superior State University gave them a 5-1 win over Clarkson on the road Friday night with all six goals in the game coming on the power play. Saturday night, Clarkson rebounded for a 7-1 win.

Friday night, Clarkson came out strong dominating the Lakers in the first five minutes of the game. Lake Superior State senior goaltender Jeff Jakaitis kept the Lakers in the game. At one point early in the first period, Clarkson had out-shot LSSU 11-2.

Sophomore Josh Sim turned the momentum in the Lakers' favor by scoring a power-play goal midway through the first period. LSSU senior Jeff Rainville was able to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission by scoring his first goal of the season, also on the power play.

Clarkson was able to pull the game to within one goal in the second period with Steve Zalewski scoring.

Lake Superior State never looked back after coming back onto the ice in the third period, with Trent Campbell getting his first goal of the young season. Sim scored his second goal of the game to give LSSU a 4-1 lead and Nathan Perkovich sealed the game for the Lakers by scoring his second goal on the season to give the Lakers a 5-1 victory. Jakaitis finished with 33 stops and Derek Smith chipped in with three assists.

Saturday night, the Lakers came out flat and could never get going.

The lone bright spot for the Lakers Saturday night was Perkovich scoring his third goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play in the third period.

Clarkson put 53 shots on goal while the Lakers where only able to muster 23 shots in the contest. Jakaitis gave up five goals on 30 shots before being pulled midway though the second period in favor of freshman Pat Inglis. Inglis gave up two goals while facing only 23 shots in the second half of the contest.

The Lakers open the home part of their schedule next weekend against American International College. As part of Great Lake State Weekend, Friday's game will start at 7:35, while Saturday's game will start at 5:05.
