Wolverines edge Spartans Tuesday night
T.J. Hensick broke a 1-1 tie 6:28 into the third period and Michigan held on for a 2-1 win over Michigan State last night at Yost Ice Arena."Kevin Porter found me in the slot and luckily I got in behind the defense," said Hensick of his game-winner. "With (MSU goalie Jeff) Lerg being as short as he is, he left open the upstairs over his glove. I'm not sure how it went in, but I just shot there, and it went in. It was a good feeling. I haven't scored in a while. My last goal was against Michigan State, actually. It was good to get back on the scoreboard."
Porter scored the other goal for the Wolverines and goalie Billy Sauer (pictured) made 24 saves, allowing only a Tim Kennedy goal in the first minute of the second period.
Four of Kennedy's seven goals this season have come against Michigan.
Lerg finished with 26 saves for MSU.
The Wolverines (10-3-0, 7-2-0 CCHA) have put together a six-game winning streak, dating back to its defeat of the Spartans (6-4-1, 4-4-1 CCHA) back on Nov. 4.
"It was a hard-fought game by both teams," U-M head coach Red Berenson said. "We weren't having our best game, but we got better as the game went on. It was a gut-check type game. Somehow, the referee put us on our heels in the last period. We had to kill off at least three penalties and that's a tough way to have to play at home. But we did it. We killed those penalties and we got the goaltending. It was a good team goal. The winning goal was something you can't coach, but you can recruit."
Both the Wolverines and Spartans head to the College Hockey Showcase this weekend to play at Wisconsin and at Minnesota.
Ferris State signs two forwards, two 'D'
Ferris State University announced four student-athletes have signed NCAA Letters of Intent to attend FSU and play hockey for the Bulldogs starting with the 2007-08 season.
Ferris has received commitments from left wing Pat Maroon, right wing Todd Pococke (Saginaw), defenseman Zach Redmond (Traverse City) and defenseman Scott Wietecha (Wolverine Lake) during the November early-signing period.
"We're (coaching staff) encouraged about the four players we signed during the early-signing period," said FSU head coach Bob Daniels, who's currently in his 15th year at Ferris State and is the Bulldogs' all-time winningest coach. "We believe they will lay the groundwork for a strong class coming in the fall of 2007."
"I believe we've once again attracted some of the top Michigan prospects," stated associate head coach Drew Famulak. "This group of freshmen are not only talented, but their personalities in terms of work ethic both on and off the ice will fit in extremely well with next season's team. All these guys not only possess good character, but are solid student-athletes and will serve as quality representatives of our program."
Maroon, a 6-4, 225-pound forward, is presently in his first season with the St. Louis (Mo.) Bandits of the North American Hockey League (NAHL)and has a squad-best 32 points on 13 goals with 19 assists in 19 contests. He also has tallied four power-play lamplighters and three short-handed markers. His 32-points total currently ranks third among the NAHL's overall points leaders. Maroon played the 2005-06 season at Texarkana (Ark.) and was named the Bandits' Rookie of the Year after finishing third in team scoring with 60 points on 23 goals and 37 assists in 57 games. Maroon, who was a juniors teammate of current Ferris State skaters Casey Haines and Aaron Lewicki at Texarkana, is listed on the National Hockey League's Central Scouting Service's 'B' prospects list. The NHL Central Scouting rates the 'B' prospects are those players who are potential late-round selections in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
"Pat is a big, strong left winger with good hands and vision," said Famulak. "He has the ability to finish around the net. With continued off-ice conditioning, he should be able to step in immediately and contribute offensively."
Like Maroon, Pococke is also currently skating for the St. Louis (Mo.) Bandits. The 6-2, 200-pounder has notched five goals and six assists for 11 points in 18 games. Pococke has produced two game-winning markers this season in helping St. Louis compile a NAHL South Division first-place 18-2-1 record, which is also tops in the NAHL overall standings. Prior to juniors, Pococke competed for Honeybaked at the midget level.
"Todd is a good character kid," said Famulak. "He's another big and strong individual who competes hard every night. He skates well and will add energy to our lineup."
The 6-1, 200-pound Redmond is midst his second season with the United States Hockey League's Sioux Falls Stampede. Redmond has posted seven points with two goals and five assists in 14 outings to date this campaign and is tied for first in team points among the Stampede's defensemen. In the 2005-06 campaign, Redmond totaled 11 points on four goals with seven helpers in 48 contests which represented the fifth-highest output for the squad's blueliners. Sioux Falls claimed both the Western Division title and were crowned the Anderson Cup Champions in 2005-06 as a result of being the overall league champion. Redmond played for the Compuware Ambassadors prior to competing in the junior ranks.
"Zach has the ability to create scoring opportunities from the offensive blueline," Famulak said. "He also has the skills to be a capable defender along with generating offense. Zach possesses a good shot and can be effective on the power play through his on-ice vision."
Wietecha, a 6-1, 205-pound defender, has presently registered four goals on two goals and assists apiece in seven 2006-07 games with the Cedar Rapids (RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League. "Scott is a big, strong physical-type of defenseman who can dominate play in the defensive zone," said Famulak. "He has a great one-time slapshot from the offensive blueline."

Western Michigan surrendered four power-play goals and couldn't recover in a 7-2 loss Friday night. Mike Santorelli registered a hat trick and Darin Olver registered two goals and an assist to lead the Wildcats, who scored four times in the second period.
"We dug ourselves in a hole and weren't very good on special teams," said WMU head coach Jim Culhane. "Hats off to Northern, they were the better team tonight."

Brian Bicek notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season for WMU, while freshman Chris Clackson scored his second marker of the year, with brother Matt assisting on the play.
Saturday night, Kevin Labatte's first game-winning goal couldn't have occurred at a more opportune time.
Labatte (pictured) buried a drop pass from Mark Letestu three minutes into overtime to lift Western Michigan to a 3-2 win over Northern Michigan.
Decked out in gold uniforms for the first time since the 1997-98 season, WMU built a 2-0 lead after two periods on goals from Jeff Pierce and Letestu. NMU rallied, however, behind a shorthanded goal from Santorelli and a power-play tally from Nathan Sigmund.
The teams exchanged two shots apiece in overtime. Gill made 30 saves to improve to 4-1-1 on the season. Zaniboni finished with 26 stops for NMU.

Michigan State splits with Notre Dame
The home team won each game last weekend as Michigan State fell at Notre Dame Friday night, but rebounded for a shutout Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.Jeff Lerg (right) made 28 saves, but the Spartans could only muster a goal from Bryan Lerg in Friday's 4-1 defeat. Noah Babin's goal in the first period snapped Lerg's scoreless streak at 104:45, dating back to last Tuesday's game against Ferris State.
Saturday night at home, Michigan State got a 25-save shutout from Lerg - his second in two weeks - to post a 2-0 victory over the Fighting Irish. Bryan Lerg and Tim Crowder potted goals for Michigan State, which remains unbeaten on its home ice this season (5-0-1) and is now 6-3-1 overall, 4-3-1 in CCHA play.
"I thought for this game we found that you can't be afraid to name a game `a big game," said MSU head coach Rick Comley. "That's what we talked about - if we want to finish in the upper part of the league and to be legitimate, this is one of the better teams and we had to say `OK, this is one of the games we have to win.' It doesn't end your season if you don't win, but I was impressed with the way we came out. We played very, very solid."
The loss snapped Notre Dame's unbeaten streak at nine games (8-0-1) and dropped their overall mark to 9-2-1, and gave the Irish their first loss in CCHA play (4-1-1).
The Spartans venture to Yost Ice Arena to play Michigan tonight.

GVSU blanked at Michigan
The Grand Valley State University Lakers traveled to Yost Ice Arena this past weekend for a single game against the University of Michigan. The Lakers took the first game against the Wolverines at Georgetown earlier this season. In this game, however, nothing would go right for GVSU. The Wolverines got on the board twice early with hard shots from the point. Though GVSU did rebound with plenty of chances, they were unable put anything by Michigan's goaltender, Andrew Godoshian, who played an excellent game.
While GVSU, without leading scorer Nick Biondo, was pressing at the end of the game by playing four forwards and only one defenseman, Michigan was able to take advantage of the situation and put three more goals behind Laker goaltender Grant Lyon. The game ended in a 5-0 GVSU loss.

Clarkson struck first in Friday's game on a breakaway shot from Genevieve Lavoie that beat Valery Turcotte late in the first period. While Clarkson offensively dominated the game, outshooting Wayne State 30-15, Turcotte kept the game close for her teammates.
Sam Poyton scored midway through the third period to even the score. Chelsea Burnett assisted on Poyton's goal. It was then Frakie (pictured), with some help from Emily Berzins, who put the Warriors ahead for good.

On Saturday, the Warriors kept the game close until a four-goal third period by Clarkson shut the door on Wayne State's hopes for a sweep.
The first period ended with the Warriors ahead 1-0 on a power-play goal by Melissa Boal, assisted by Lindsay DiPietro. Clarkson struck twice in the second, but by early in the third period, Poyton and Boal each scored to edge the Warriors into the lead. But Clarkson scored three power-play goals in the third period to run away with the lead.
Turcotte was pulled in the final minute to give the Warriors an extra attacker. The effort only resulted in an empty-net goal for the Golden Knights from Jessica Cloutier to seal the 6-3 victory for Clarkson.
Turcotte finished Saturday's game with 19 saves.
The Warriors will face some different competition on the road Thanksgiving weekend when they head the University of New Hampshire Tournament. They will play UNH on Friday and Boston College on Saturday.

I think the first 10 minutes we played pretty well. We took a lot of penalties and so did the other team. It kind of threw our game off track a little bit. We never really got into the flow of the game. We were lucky to hang on and win that game 3-2."
