Compiled by MiCHO Staff

The University of Michigan announced on Thursday that forward Luke Glendening will join the Wolverines as a walk-on for the 2008-09 campaign.

Glendening, a Grand Rapids native, becomes the fifth member of U-M's freshman class this fall, joining two forwards and two defensemen.

Glendening spent a postgraduate year at The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut in 2007-08. He helped the Bearcats to a 14-6-4 record, scoring eight goals and 20 assists while playing in all 24 contests. In addition to lettering in hockey, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Glendening was a standout for Hotchkiss in football and baseball.

Prior to attending Hotchkiss, Glendening graduated from East Grand Rapids High School.

"Luke will provide some depth up front for us," said U-M assistant coach Billy Powers. "He's an intelligent centerman who is strong physically and plays with an edge."

Former NMU Wildcat Nathan Oystrick and MSU Spartan Colton Fretter helped the Chicago Wolves to the American Hockey League’s 2008 Calder Cup championship with a 5-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before 9,808 fans at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on Tuesday night.

Oystrick, a 2007 AHL All-Rookie defenseman, scored the first goal of the game as the Wolves defeated the Penguins four games to two to win their second AHL title and first since 2002.

Oystick finished the playoffs with three goals and eight assists. In the regular season, he posted 15 goals with 23 helpers.

Fretter saw limited action during the regular season with the Wolves, compiling a goal and three assists in eight games. He also saw time with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers and ECHL’s Gwinnett Gladiators this season.

The Wolves are the top development team of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers.

Reinke tabbed to lead FU women

Compiled by MiCHO Staff

Finlandia has announced that Heather Reinke has accepted the position of assistant athletic director/senior women’s administrator and head women’s hockey coach beginning in the 2008-09 athletics season.

“Heather is coming from two exceptional NCAA Division I schools, having been assistant women’s ice hockey coach under two exceptional Division I coaches,” said Finlandia athletics director Chris Salani, the former women's coach. “I fully anticipate that she will develop Finlandia’s women’s ice hockey program into not only a prominent NCHA contender, but into a prominent NCAA Division III hockey team.”

Reinke comes to Finlandia from Brown University. At Brown, she was assistant women’s hockey coach under Digit Murphy, the all-time winningest Division I women’s hockey coach in NCAA history and the third collegiate women’s hockey coach to surpass the 300-win mark.

From 2000 to 2006, Reinke was assistant, then associate coach, for the women’s hockey team at Niagara University. Reinke worked under head coach Margot Page at Niagara, stepping in as interim head coach while Page helped coach the Canadian national women’s hockey team to a gold medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy.

As assistant athletic director and senior women’s administrator, Reinke will assist in the administration of Finlandia’s athletic program, in particular overseeing NCAA rules compliance, supervising the student-athlete advisory committee and acting as a mentor and advocate of equity and diversity within the athletic department.

Reinke earned a bachelor of arts in psychology at the University of New Hampshire, where she played defense on the women’s hockey team, earning All-Eastern College Athletic Conference honors in each of her four years there. She is pursuing a masters degree in sports psychology through Minnesota State University.
