Falcons tie, beat Western Michigan

By Karl Henkel/Western Michigan Beat Writer

Western Michigan drew a tie and a loss with Bowling Green in a weekend series.

The Broncos, who trailed 4-2 in the opener, got two late goals with an extra attacker and forced a 4-4 tie.

With less than five minutes to play, Matt Tennyson scored his first goal of the season after WMU goalie Riley Gill vacated the net on a delayed penalty. Then, with three seconds remaining in regulation, Greg Squires pounced on a rebound and tied the game.

Max Campbell assisted on all four goals for Western Michigan. His four points were the most by a Bronco since Jeff LoVecchio scored two goals and had two assists against Ohio State on Nov. 23, 2007.

In net, Gill and Nick Eno stopped 32 for WMU and BGSU, respectively. Bowling Green won the shootout, 3-2.

In the second game, the Broncos twice evened the game up after falling behind by a goal, but Jordan Samuels-Thomas’ third-period goal was the difference for Bowling Green in a 3-2 victory.

WMU’s penalty kill was one reason for the loss as it allowed two power-play goals.

Gill made 34 stops for the Broncos and Eno made 14 for BGSU.

Western Michigan (6-13-5, 2-12-4-1 CCHA) next hosts No. 1-ranked Miami Friday and Saturday. Friday’s contest begins at 7:05 p.m, while Saturday’s game is at 5:05 p.m.

WMU hasn’t won a game in regulation since early December.
