Wolverines assist in opening WJC victory

Michigan freshman Kevin Porter had two assists, including one on the short-handed game-winning goal by Dan Fritsche 8:40 into the second period, as the defending champion United States beat Russia, 5-4, Saturday in the opening round of the World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, N.D.

Michigan goalie Al Montoya made 30 saves for the Americans, and Michigan sophomore defenseman Matt Hunwick added an assist.

Team USA plays Switzerland Monday night at 9:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on ESPN2.
