Finlandia women sweep St. Benedict at home

The Finlandia women started 2005 the way they ended 2004 - with a win.

On New Year's Eve, the Lions got a goal from freshman Danielle Syrowik with 65 seconds left in regulation to snap a 2-2 tie and give the home team a 3-2 victory. Senior co-captain Becky Beauchamp and freshman Ashley Leitch (power-play) scored second-period goals before St. Benedict scored the first two of the third period.

Finlandia freshman goalie Corinne Czekaj made 19 saves for the win. The Lions out-shot St. Benedict, 36-21.

Ringing in 2005, freshman Sara Sleik scored twice and added an assist in Finlandia's 5-1 win on Jan. 1. Newcomer Brenda Peterson, Syrowik and sophomore Jana Riutta also scored for the hosts. Sophomore goalie Katie Markovich stopped 18 of 19 shots for the win.

Finlandia (3-9-0, 0-4-0 NCHA) is off until Jan. 11 when they host Wisconsin-Superior and then Robert Morris College in an exhibition game Jan. 14.
