Spartans split at Miami

Michigan State came out strong with a 4-0 win at Miami on Friday night, but then dropped a 4-1 decision the following evening.

Friday, sophomore goalie Dominic Vicari pitched a 30-save shutout and senior captain Jim Slater scored a power-play goal and added two assists. Junior Colton Fretter had a goal and an assist and senior Mike Lalonde and freshman Bryan Lerg scored once.

"They had a lot of shots on the power play," said Vicari. "I think we were getting outshot there for awhile, but we managed to get some shots and some goals. I felt pretty good and solid out there. This really helps to build the team's confidence, as well as my own confidence."

Saturday, senior Adam Nightingale's goal with the man advantage early in the second period was all MSU could muster as Miami goalie Charlie Effinger made 34 saves. Vicari stopped 19 shots.

Michigan State returns to the ice this weekend for a home-and-home series against Western Michigan. The Spartans travel to Kalamazoo on Friday for a 7:35 p.m. face-off. The Spartans then entertain the Broncos at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
