Western falls to Robert Morris in season opener

The Western Michigan Broncos lost their season opener by a score of 5-2 to the Robert Morris Colonials last Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena.

Brent Walton (left) put the Broncos on the board in the first period. Reid Yantzi and Mike Erickson earned the assists on his goal.

Robert Morris retaliated with a pair of goals from Jake Sparks and Brett Hopfe. Western was able to even the score by the end of the second period thanks to a Dave Krisky power-play goal. Ryan Moore and goalie Daniel Bellissimo were credited with the assists.

At the start of the third period, Bellissimo was pulled and Scott Foster took over netminder duties. Bellissimo made eleven saves in the first two periods. Foster faced seven shots, but was only able to stop four as RMU co-captain Kurt Wright, Tom Bicudich, and Sparks lit the lamp for Robert Morris and the Broncos could not respond.

Goalie Christian Boucher had 25 saves for Robert Morris.

The Broncos travel to Niagara this Saturday night for their lone game this week.
