Wildcats split with Buckeyes

The Northern Michigan Wildcats (4-3-1, 1-1-0 CCHA) started the CCHA season with a split at home against Ohio State over the weekend.

The Wildcats began the two-game series with a 2-0 shutout over the Buckeyes on Friday for their fifth straight win in a conference opener.

Nick Sirota and Darin Olver scored and Bill Zaniboni made 22 stops as the 'Cats won their fourth in a row.

Saturday night did not go as well as the Buckeyes doubled up the Wildcats 4-2 at the Berry Events Center.

The 'Cats spotted the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead before Mike Santorelli and Blake Cosgrove scored back-to-back goals in third to cut the visitor's lead to 1.

The Buckeyes added an empty net goal with four seconds left to seal the win.

Zaniboni started between the pipes for the Wildcats and was 28 of 31. Brian Stewart came in in relief early in the third period and stopped all 7 shots he faced.

The Wildcats will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games in Oxford, OH against the Miami RedHawks.
