Finlandia men sweep, women get point

The Finlandia men's team travelled to Northland last weekend and swept the host Lumberjacks.

Friday night, the Lions took a 5-1 win and Saturday, a 7-3 victory.

Josh Paquette had a goal and two assists Friday and Ryan Sullivan, Joe Beaudry, Tiger Marcotte (penalty shot) and Keith Johnstone also scored. Joe Juntilla stopped 19 shots for FU, who put 54 shots on Northland goalie Bo Storozuk.

Seven different players - Paquette, Johnstone, Beaudry, Sullivan, Mike Parks, Kasey Kreuter and Derek Onkalo - scored for Finlandia Saturday night to back Lukas Alberer's 25 saves.

Beaudry and C.J. Fisher added two assists apiece for Finlandia.

The Lions sent 57 shots on Northland goalies Storozuk and Justin Grant.

FU (3-1-0, 3-1-0 MCHA) play in the Augsburg Tournament tonight against host Augsburg and tomorrow against Wisconsin-Superior or Bethel.

The Finlandia women's team only gained a single point last weekend as they tied and lost at home to Lake Forest.

Friday, Courtney DeHoey's second goal of the game with 3:52 to play brought the Foresters into the 2-2 tie.

Brenda Peterson and Sara Sleik scored for FU and Corinne Czekaj stopped 25 shots in net.

Saturday, Lake Forest defeated the Lions, 5-4. Sleik and Peterson scored again and Carly Akers and Danielle Syrowik added singles for Finlandia (3-3-2, 0-1-1 NCHA). Czekaj started and made seven saves on 10 shots in the first period before Katie Markovich played the final 40 minutes and stopped 19 of 21 shots. Markovich took the loss.

The Lions host Wisconsin-Superior next Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 2-3).
