Warriors split with Clarkson, UNH next

The Wayne State Warriors hosted Clarkson this past weekend. The Warriors defeated the Golden Knights 2-1 on Friday, thanks to freshman Brandi Frakie's game-winning goal.

However, they could not maintain the momentum through Saturday night, and lost 6-3. The Warriors' record now stands at 5-7-0.

Clarkson struck first in Friday's game on a breakaway shot from Genevieve Lavoie that beat Valery Turcotte late in the first period. While Clarkson offensively dominated the game, outshooting Wayne State 30-15, Turcotte kept the game close for her teammates.

Sam Poyton scored midway through the third period to even the score. Chelsea Burnett assisted on Poyton's goal. It was then Frakie (pictured), with some help from Emily Berzins, who put the Warriors ahead for good.

Turcotte finished with 29 saves in the 2-1 win.

On Saturday, the Warriors kept the game close until a four-goal third period by Clarkson shut the door on Wayne State's hopes for a sweep.

The first period ended with the Warriors ahead 1-0 on a power-play goal by Melissa Boal, assisted by Lindsay DiPietro. Clarkson struck twice in the second, but by early in the third period, Poyton and Boal each scored to edge the Warriors into the lead. But Clarkson scored three power-play goals in the third period to run away with the lead.

Turcotte was pulled in the final minute to give the Warriors an extra attacker. The effort only resulted in an empty-net goal for the Golden Knights from Jessica Cloutier to seal the 6-3 victory for Clarkson.

Turcotte finished Saturday's game with 19 saves.

The Warriors will face some different competition on the road Thanksgiving weekend when they head the University of New Hampshire Tournament. They will play UNH on Friday and Boston College on Saturday.
