The Ferris State Bulldogs struggled on the road this past weekend as they lost a two-game set to the Miami RedHawks in Oxford, Ohio.
The Bulldogs fell 5-3 on Friday as the RedHawks' Ryan Jones scored a hat trick to help overcome an early Zac Pearson power-play goal that gave Ferris State a 1-0 first period lead.
Miami scored three consecutive second period powerplay goals to jump ahead 3-1. The Bulldogs responded with two even strength markers, the first by Joe Van Culin at 17:25 and the second less than two minutes later by Dan Riedel at 19:06 to send the game into the locker room for the second intermission at 3-3.
Jones scored at 4:05 and 11:16 of the third to earn his hat trick and the victory for the RedHawks.
Jeff Zatkoff (Chesterfield) had 23 saves for Miami, while Mitch O'Keefe stopped 30 shots for the Bulldogs.
Saturday night it was all Redhawks as they steadily forged a 5-0 lead after two periods on goals by Alec Martinez (Rochester), Matt Christie, Nino Musitelli (Macomb) and two more by the sharpshooting Jones. Cody Chupp (pictured) ended the RedHawks' scoring string with a tally at 2:28 of the third period. After two more Miami goals making it 7-1, Brendan Connolly ended the night's scoring with a power-play goal at 14:19 for a 7-2 defeat
O'Keefe and Derek MacIntyre combined for 34 saves in the FSU cage. Zatkoff stopped 15 shots for Miami.
Jones had a five goals over the two-game span to help lead the RedHawks to 12 for the weekend.
Ferris State (4-10-1, 2-8-1 CCHA) hosts Lake Superior State this weekend.
