Ferris State University had no trouble scoring goals in their scrimmage against the University of Windsor Sunday, coming out on top by a 4-1 margin.
The Bulldogs took the early lead with a power play goal by senior Brendan Connolly (pictured right) with 6:24 gone by in the opening period. Setting-up the goal were assistant captain Blair Riley and defenseman Scott Wietecha.
Sophomore Mike Fillinger extended the lead for Ferris State in the middle stanza when he passed to winger Corey Couturier at the 2:27 mark.
As Connolly sat in the penalty box on a holding call just minutes later, the Lancers were able to score with the man-advantage. Danny Anger chipped the puck over to Kyle Lang, who then blasted the puck past goaltender Pat Nagle.
At the midway point of the period, Bulldogs head coach Bob Daniels pulled Nagle to give freshman Taylor Nelson some game experience.
Connolly extended Ferris State's lead to 3-1 late in the period by scoring his second goal of the night at 15:08 with the help of juniors Aaron Lewicki and Matt Case.
Wietecha (pictured left) snuck the puck past Windsor netiminder Jim Watt on the power-play with 12:24 remaining in the third period, as forwards Justin Menke and Cody Chupp were credited with the helpers.
The referees remained busy in the final two minutes of the game due to the chippy behavior shown by both teams. Senior Justin Lewandowski and freshman Tommy Hill were slapped with 10-minute misconducts for their rough play against the Lancers’ Evan Weber and Brett Vandehogen.
Shortly thereafter, Connolly had a slight brush with defenseman and former Windsor Spitfires tough guy Scott Todd. Both players earned matching minors for roughing, but Connolly also called for unsportsmanlike conduct and 10-minute misconduct.
Aside from their two power-play goals, the Bulldogs were also dominant in over the Lancers in shots on net with 53-14 advantage.
Nelson led Ferris State in saves with eight, while Nagle stopped five shots.
The Bulldogs open the regular season at home this week with two non-conference games against Canisius. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm on Friday, while Saturday’s match-up is set for 5:05 pm.
