Lakers split with Ohio State

by Mike Burrill/LSSU Beat Writer

The Lake Superior State Lakers travelled to Ohio State over the weekend in CCHA action. On Friday, they beat the Buckeys 7-3, but lost the following night 4-2.

FRIDAY
Nathan Perkovich, Chad Nehring and freshman Fred Cassiani each scored two goals apiece as the visiting Lakers blasted the Buckeyes, 7-3. They each scored a goal in the first period to erase a 1-0 Ohio State lead. Freshman Dan Barczuk also scored his first goal as a Laker, lighting the lamp in the second period. Defensman Steven Kaunisto led LSSU with three assists. In net, Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 37 saves in the winning effort.

"We had a tough two games last weekend so it was nice for us to get a couple of bounces around the net this weekend," LSSU head coach Jim Roque said. "We try to have three lines that can score. To have our fourth line scoring - that was a little something extra."

SATURDAY
OSU outscored the Lakers 3-1 in the third period on their way to a 4-2 win. Kaunisto scored the Lakers first goal in the second period assisted by Carter Lee and Josh Sim. Tied 1-1 in the third, Zac McVoy extended his point streak to four games as he found the back of the net. Dillon Stonehouse would get credited with the only assist. Junior netminder Pat Inglis made 33 saves in the loss.

The Lakers (1-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) play host to Windsor in exhibition play this Saturday.
