Lakers earn point in Alaska

By Michael David/Lake Superior State Beat Writer

The Lake Superior State Lakers traveled all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska, over the holiday weekend to pick up one point with a 1-1 tie on Saturday night. The Lakers lost Friday night's contest, 4-1.

Friday night Rick Schofield's power-play goal in the second period was the only offense Lake State could muster. Matt Cowie and Zac MacVoy earned the assists. LSSU outshot the Nanooks, 10-5, in the third, but UAF scored an empty-netter to secure the win.

In net, Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 19 saves in the game, while Mitch Edmonson made four saves in relief.

Saturday night, the Lakers and Nanooks each scored a first-period goal, that stood throughout the rest of the game and overtime. LSSU's goal was scored by senior captain Troy Schwab and assisted by Josh Sim and Fred Cassiani.

Mahoney-Wilson stopped 24 shots for the Lakers, but the Nanooks won the shootout 1-0 to gain the extra point in the game.

The Lakers (4-6-4, 3-4-3-1 CCHA) stay in CCHA play next weekend as they host their U.P. rival Northern Michigan Wildcats.
