Lakers, Wildcats skate to stalemates

By Michael David/Lake Superior State Beat Writer

Nothing was solved in the first round of the Cappo Cup series over the weekend, as the Lake Superior State Lakers and the Northern Michigan Wildcats skated to back-to-back ties.

The two teams slugged out a 1-1 decision on Friday and a 2-2 decision on Saturday. The Wildcats won the shootouts to gain the extra points, but the games are considered a tie by the NCAA.

Friday night, the Lakers came out flat and didn't come to life until the third period. Zac MacVoy finally got the Lakers on the board with a goal assisted by Simon Gysbers to secure the tie. Neither team could net the game winner in overtime. In net, Brian Mahoney-Wilson ended the game with 30 saves.

Gregor Hanson scored for NMU (3-10-3, 2-9-3-2 CCHA) and Devan Hartigan made 29 saves in net.

Saturday night, LSSU would draw first blood. Pat Aubry scored his first goal of the season when he deflected a shot by defenseman Tyson Hobbins. Chad Nehring would get the other assist. Northern would add a power-play goal in the first and second periods (both by Mark Olver and both assisted by Nick Sirota and Phil Fox) to take the lead.

The Lakers would come out strong again in the third and Troy Schwab finally tied the game for his team with under four minutes remaining. The Lakers couldn't cash in on their momentum to find the game-winner in regulation or overtime.

Mahoney-Wilson made 21 saves on the night and Hartigan kicked out 27.

Lake Superior State (4-6-6, 3-4-5-1 CCHA) hosts Nebraska-Omaha next weekend in the final CCHA series of 2008. NMU will play the U.S. NTDP at home in exhibition play on Saturday night.
