FSU and WMU split home-and-home

Western Michigan visited Ferris State on Friday night and walked away with a 2-1 victory, thanks in large part to a pair of goals in the second period.

Broncos’ freshman Kyle O’ Kane scored his first collegiate goal with 3:45 gone by in the middle period, with Kevin Connauton and Tyler Ludwig being credited for the helpers.

Just before the midway point, Patrick Nagorsen passed the puck up ice to J.J. Crew, who then beat goaltender Pat Nagle for the game-winning goal.

Any chance of Western Michigan netminder Riley Gill getting a shutout came to an end at 13:16 in the final stanza, when Mike Embach notched his fourth marker of the year, courtesy of Corey Couturier and Brendan Connolly.

Gill grabbed his fourth win of the season and earned first-star honors after stopping 38 shots, while Nagle put together a 29-save performance.

The Western Michigan Broncos couldn’t stay out of the penalty box, and it cost them dearly in the end, as they fell to Ferris State, 4-2, in the final game of a home-and-home series Saturday night in Kalamazoo.

WMU was called for 13 penalties and FSU capitalized on three of the advantages.

After falling behind 2-0, J.J. Crew cut the Ferris State lead in half, but the Bulldogs tacked on two more goals to make it 4-1.

Chris Frank scored his first goal of the season to close out the scoring.

Pat Nagle had 32 stops for FSU and Riley Gill had 30 for WMU.

Western Michigan (4-13-5, 3-9-4-1 CCHA) hosts Alabama-Huntsville next weekend. Ferris State (10-10-4, 7-7-2-0 CCHA) is home for a pair of games against Ohio State.
