After a rather successful road series against Ohio State last weekend, Western Michigan returned home and reverted back to its losing ways, dropping two games to Northern Michigan.
WMU’s four-game unbeaten streak ended with a 6-5 loss to NMU in the opener.
The Broncos took nine penalties in the game that contributed to a 6-2 deficit before a triumphant comeback attempt.
Captain Chris Frank cut the lead in half before Cam Watson netted two straight goals. After pulling netminder Riley Gill for an extra skater, Western Michigan came close, but could not tie the game before the end of regulation.
Brian Stewart had 30 stops for NMU and Gill had 26 for WMU.
In the second game, Kyle O’Kane and Sean Weaver gave Western Michigan leads of 1-0 and 2-1, respectively, but Northern Michigan tallied three straight scores and held off the Broncos to win 4-3.
NMU’s Phil Fox scored two power play goals in the last 1:47 of the second period to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Justin Florek extended the lead before WMU’s Max Campbell rounded out the scoring.
Stewart made 26 saves and Jerry Kuhn had 23 for Western Michigan.
WMU (7-15-6, 4-11-5-1 CCHA) will play a road series against Nebraska-Omaha (13-10-6, 8-8-6-3 CCHA). Friday and Saturday’s start times are 8:05 p.m.
