Lakers outgun Huskies Sunday evening

By Andy Bourdeau/Michigan Tech Beat Writer

Michigan Tech was coming off a big win against Northern Michigan, while Lake Superior State was coming off a hard-fought loss to Minnesota Duluth, both looking to close the Superior Showcase with a win.

Sunday night, it was the Lakers that earned the win with a 3-1 victory over the Huskies.

LSSU controlled much of the play and were able to capitalize once in each frame. It was senior Zac MacVoy (pictured) who started the scoring, with a goal just seconds after the Lakers first power play was over. The second goal of the night came off of the stick of Chad Nehring, when he tipped in a shot from Rick Schofield. This time it was on the man-advantage, and was the first of two power-play goals for the Lakers.

MTU (1-1-0) was within one when freshman Milos Gordic recorded his first goal of his career when he scored as MTU had an empty net, and was shorthanded, but seconds later LSSU put the game away with a final power-play goal by Pat Aubry.

Kevin Genoe started his first game as a Husky in net and made 29 saves, while his counterpart, Brian Mahoney-Wilson, made 28 stops and earned the win.

“I was happy for our kids,” said Lakers’ coach Jim Roque. “We are hoping this will give us some confidence for next few weeks.”

MTU head coach Jamie Russell was not as pleased.

“I thought we were undisciplined tonight," Russell said. "We did not pressure their goalie as much as we needed to.”

Lake Superior State (1-1-0) hosts Canisius next weekend, while the Huskies have next weekend off before starting WCHA play at Colorado College on Oct. 23.
