Lakers split CCHA opener with OSU

The Lake Superior State Lakers started the CCHA regular-season with a split against the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers extended their winning streak to four-games with a 3-2 win over the Buckeyes in the Sault on Friday night.

Simon Gysbers, Steven Kaunisto, and Rick Schofield scored for LSSU and Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 32 saves.

Sergio Somma and Matt Bartkowski recorded tallies and Dustin Carlson stopped 28 for OSU.

Lake Superior gave up two leads in Saturday's finale and ended up falling by a 4-3 score.

Chad Nehring and Will Acton put LSSU up 2-0 in the first period, but OSU came back to tie the score.

Steven Kaunisto put the Lakers back on top, 3-2, with his second of the season at 3:56 of the second period.

Peter Boyd and Patrick Schafer both scored before the period ended and OSU held on for just their second win of the year.

Pat Inglis started in net for LSSU and was pulled after surrendering four goals on 23 shots. Mahoney-Wilson mopped up with in the third period with 12 saves.

Cal Heeter stopped 25 for the Buckeyes.

Matt Bartkowski and Sergio Somma also scored for Ohio State.

LSSU will conclude their six-game homestand by hosting the Michigan Wolverines in a pair of games next weekend.
