Lakers sweep out Golden Griffins

The Lake Superior State Lakers pushed their winning streak to three-games as they swept the Canisius Golden Griffins at the Taffy Abel Arena over the weekend.

The Lakers (3-1-0) had a battle on their hands Friday night, but held off the Griffs for a 5-4 victory.

Tyson Hobbins, John Scrymgeour, and Brad Cooper all scored by the 1:53 mark of the second period to push LSSU out to a sizable 3-0 lead.

Cory Conacher singlehandedly got Canisius back in the game by scoring three straight goals to tie it up at 3-all.

Domenic Monardo put the Lakers back on top just 56 seconds into the third period, but the Griffins wouldn’t go away.

At 7:11, Ryan Klusendorf scored to tie up the game at 4-4.

Cooper put the final nail in the coffin though, scoring at 7:53 to seal the narrow 5-4 win for the Lakers.

Brian Mahoney-Wilson (pictured) stopped 17 for LSSU and Dan Morrison turned away 38 for Canisius.

Saturday was not as close as the Lakers dominated in a 3-0 win.

Will Acton scored on the power play at 4:20 of the first period and that turned out to be all the Lakers needed.

Tyson Hobbins scored under a minute later and Simon Gysbers notched his first of the season 17:41.

Mahoney-Wilson started again for LSSU and stopped 18 shots. Morrison stopped another 24 for the visitors.

The Lakers will play the middle two games of their six-game homestand and begin the CCHA season when they welcome the Ohio State Buckeyes to Sault Ste. Marie next weekend. The two games will also mark their second annual Pink in the Rink event and parents weekend.
