The Lake Superior State Lakers' three-game unbeaten streak came to a quick end at the Taffy Abel Arena on Friday night as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish posted a 6-1 victory.
Defenseman Steven Kaunisto scored his third goal of the season at 2:01 of the first period to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
ND’s Ryan Thang tied the score at 13:41 of the first period and then the Irish took over with five straight second period goals.
Calle Ridderwall led the charge with a natural hat trick and Ben Ryan and Patrick Gaul also scored as Notre Dame moved their unbeaten streak to three games.
Brian Mahoney-Wilson started and played 27:58 in the LSSU net and was pulled after stopping just eight of 12 shots. Senior goaltender Pat Inglis mopped up and stopped 14 shots of 16 shots.
The Lakers (14-8-5 overall, 9-8-3-2 CCHA) grabbed a much-needed two points on Saturday night after coming out with a rough and tumble shootout win over the Irish.
Laker forward Will Acton was suspended by the CCHA for Saturday’s finale after receiving a major charging penalty for a check from behind on ND’s Ian Cole on Friday.
After 40 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Lakers netted the first goal at 10:59 of the third off the stick of freshman blueliner Zach Trotman.
The lead didn’t last long as just 23 seconds later, Notre Dame got a gift of a goal off the skate of Nick Larson to tie the contest at 1-1.
Neither team could score in the five-minute extra frame and the game went to the always-popular shootout.
Freshman Domenic Monardo gave the Lakers the lone goal in the shootout and Mahoney-Wilson was perfect to give the Lakers the much needed victory.
Mahoney-Wilson made 27 saves for the night for LSSU, while Notre Dame's Mike Johnson stopped 46.
After a weekend off, the Lake Superior will take their fifth-place CCHA record into Oxford, Ohio, for a pair of battles against first-place Miami.
