Lakers and Bulldogs split in the Sault

By Tom Balog / LSSU Beat Writer

The Lake Superior State Lakers exploded in the third period on Friday night to claim a 4-3 win over the No. 13 Ferris State Bulldogs at the Taffy Abel Arena.

Aaron Lewicki and Zach Redmond both scored power-play goals to give the visiting Bulldogs a 2-0 lead heading into a wild, final 20 minutes of play.

Rick Schofield scored just 44 seconds into the third and then Domenic Monardo scored at 14:40 for LSSU to tie the score at 2-all.

Ferris State thought they had the game in the bag when Casey Haines lit the lamp at 19:02, but the Laker heroics weren’t done just yet.

Schofield notched his second of the night just 10 seconds later to tie the score again and then at 19:25, Will Acton whacked in the game-winner to steal the contest for the Lakers.

Brian Mahoney-Wilson turned aside 28 shots for LSSU, while Taylor Nelson stopped 25 for the FSU.

Ferris State didn’t let the lead go on Saturday as they escaped the Sault with a 2-1 win and valuable series split.

Mike Embach scored near the midway point of the second period on the power play and Haines lit the lamp at 58 seconds of the third to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

Acton picked up an extra-attacker goal at 4:45, but that would prove to be the only offense the Lakers could muster on Saturday.

Mahoney-Wilson finshed with another 28 saves for LSSU and Pat Nagle stopped 24 for FSU.

With the split, Ferris State jumps into a second place tie in the CCHA with Michigan State, setting up a huge home-and-home between the Bulldogs and Spartans next weekend.

Lake Superior sits in eighth place in the conference and will be on the road at fifth place Alaska next weekend.
