MSU ties, tops Maine to open season

The Michigan State Spartans opened their season with a tie and win at home against Maine in a Thursday-Friday series this week.

Thursday night, Dustin Gazley had a goal and two assists and Drew Palmisano made 37 saves to help MSU to a 4-4 tie against the Black Bears. The Spartans were down 3-1 at one point and rallied for the point.

Daultan Leveille, Brett Perlini and Mike Merrifield also scored for Michigan State.

Last night, Gazley scored at 14:53 of the third period and the Spartans held off Maine for the final five minutes for a 3-2 victory.

Brock Shelgren tallied a goal and an assist for MSU, while Perlini added another goal and Palmisano stopped 28 shots in net.

The Spartans (1-0-1) start CCHA play next weekend when they host Alaska at Munn Ice Arena. Friday's game will be played at 7:05 p.m. live on Comcast. Saturday's game will be played at 5:05 p.m.
