Michigan State hosted the lone Division I independent school, Alabama-Huntsville, this weekend at Munn Ice Arena and came away with three points with a heartbreaking tie last night and holding on for a 2-1 win tonight.

Friday night, the Spartans blew a three-goal lead in the third period and settled for a 4-4 tie.

With an empty net and then a slashing call on MSU’s Daultan Leveille with 18 seconds left, UAH capitalized on a two-man advantage with 4.1 seconds left in the game when Joe Koudys scored for UAH.

Zach Golembiewski and Leveille staked Michigan State to a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Kennan Desmet responded for the Chargers, only for Jake Chelios to answer for MSU late in the period and then Brett Perlini gave the Spartans a 4-1 lead at 11:41 of the third period.

Justin Cseter and Neil Ruffini scored in the third for Alabama-Huntsville, setting the stage for Koudys’ game-tying tally at 19:55.

For MSU, Drew Palmisano finished with 28 saves for Michigan State, while C.J. Groh made 34 stops for the Chargers.

Then Saturday night, Perlini and Matt Grassi scored for MSU to make Palmisano’s 18 saves stand up. MSU captain Torey Krug assisted on both goals.

Mac Roy scored for UAH and Clarke Saunders stopped 28 shots for Alabama-Huntsville.

Michigan State (3-0-3) plays at Western Michigan next weekend for two CCHA games Friday and Saturday night.
