Wayne State shows off '10-11 schedule

The Wayne State University women’s hockey program has finalized its schedule for the upcoming 2010-11 season, which will begin Sept. 25 with an exhibition game at York University in Toronto.

Wayne State will open the regular season Homecoming Weekend with a home series Oct. 1-2 against Bemidji State at the City Sports Center. WSU will subsequently play its next eight games on the road.

Three of the eight 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifiers are on Wayne State’s schedule for 2010-11, including the University of Minnesota where WSU will play on Oct. 9 one day removed from a game at nearby St. Cloud State.

Series at Boston University (Oct. 15-16), which lost to College Hockey America champion Mercyhurst in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last year, and Colgate (Oct. 22-23) will lead the Warriors into their first CHA series of the year Nov. 12-13 at Robert Morris.

Mercyhurst and Minnesota State will come to Detroit over the next two weekends before WSU heads to Syracuse (Dec. 3-4).

After a break for final exams and holidays, Wayne State will travel to Columbus for a New Years series against Ohio State (Dec. 30-31).

Wayne State will host Niagara, Quinnipiac and Syracuse during a six-game homestand beginning Jan. 14. After a trip to Mercyhurst (Feb. 4-5), the Warriors will wrap up their home schedule Feb. 11-12 against Robert Morris.

Following a trip to Niagara (Feb. 18-19) to close out the regular season, Wayne State will have an idle weekend prior to the start of the CHA Tournament, March 3-5 in Syracuse.

Fetter named Canada's Under-22 coach

Hockey Canada announced last Thursday that Wayne State University head women's hockey coach Jim Fetter will serve as head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team for the 2010-11 season.

Fetter has spent the last three years within Hockey Canada as an assistant coach. For the last two seasons, Fetter was an assistant with the Under-22 Team, winning a gold medal at the 2009 MLP Cup in Ravensburg, Germany, and a silver medal in 2008. He was also an assistant coach with Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team during the 2007-08 season, winning a silver medal at the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship in Calgary, Alta.

Fetter will lead the 2010-11 National Women’s Under-22 Team into a three-game series against the United States, August 18-21 at the Mastercard Centre in Toronto, Ont., before heading to Kreuzlingen, Switzerland for the 2011 MLP Cup.

The three-time College Hockey America Coach of the Year completed his seventh season at WSU in 2009-10 and has 109 career victories. Fetter was a finalist for the American Hockey Coaches Association Women's Division I Coach of the Year Award in 2006 before earning the award in 2008.
