Spartans split with Alaska in Fairbanks

By Matt Mackinder/Michigan State Beat Writer

Michigan State ventured west for a two-game set with Alaska this past weekend and after losing Friday night, the Spartans rebounded for a win Saturday night to gain the series split.

In the MSU win, Derek Grant had two goals and two assists to pace the Spartans' attack and Drew Palmisano made 22 saves in the 6-2 win.

Michigan State captain Torey Krug, Mike Merrifield, Greg Wolfe and Lee Reimer also scored for the Spartans.

"It is so important for us to get the first goal," MSU head coach Rick Comley told MSUSpartans.com. "It's been frustrating, but we're young, and generating offense early makes us a better team, because it gives us that confidence. We had some guys leave the game with injuries, and our remaining guys really battled. It was a good road win."

Friday night, Daultan Leveille scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation for MSU's lone goal and Will Yanakeff made 26 saves between the pipes.

Michigan State ends the regular season with a two-game set against Bowling Green next weekend. MSU seniors Joey Shean and Dustin Gazley will be honored in a pre-game ceremony Saturday night.
