Two Broncos make CCHA All-Rookie Team

Four schools had one student-athlete named to the 2011 CCHA All-Rookie Team, with Western Michigan and Notre Dame each having two selections. This marks the 23rd year that the conference has named an all-rookie team. Thirteen freshmen garnered at least one vote.

Determined by a vote of the conference’s head coaches, the team will be honored at the 2011 CCHA Awards on Thursday, March 17 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

Chase Balisy, a 19-year-old forward from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., led the Broncos in conference scoring with 12 goals and 26 points. Balisy was named the CCHA Rookie of the Month for the month of January after tallying five goals and seven assists with a +7 rating. He was also named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 31 and CCHA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 17. Balisy’s 26 points put him in a three-way tie for eighth place in league scoring.

Anders Lee, a 20-year-old forward from Edina, Minn., led all freshmen and finished second in the league in goal-scoring with 21 tallies on the season. Lee, who was an unanimous selection on the All-Rookie Team, was named the CCHA Rookie of the Month on three seperate occasions during the season, along with three stints as the CCHA Rookie of the Week. The New York Islanders draft pick led the Fighting Irish in conference goals (16) and led the CCHA in game-winning markers (6). Lee is the 12th rookie in Irish history to record 40 or more points in a season.

T.J. Tynan, a 19-year-old forward from Orland Park, Ill., led all freshmen in the CCHA, and the entire nation, with 19 goals and 46 points, including 14 multiple-point games, en route to being an unanimous selection on the All-Rookie Team. Tynan was named the CCHA Rookie of the Month for November, and spent four weeks of the season as the CCHA Rookie of the Week. Tynan finished third in the league in overall scoring with a 19-27-46 line. The Irish were 15-4-2 when his name found the scoresheet in CCHA play this season.

Dan DeKeyser, a 20-year-old defenseman from Clay Township, played in all 36 games for the Broncos this season, boasting a +10 rating, which tied for the team-high among defensemen. DeKeyser was a staple on the Western Michigan power play, recording two of his four goals on the year with the man advantage. A fixture on the Broncos’ shut-down defensive pairing, DeKeyser helped the Broncos finish in the top four of the league for the first time since 1996. He’s the Broncos’ first All-Rookie team blueliner since 1997.

Jon Merrill, a 19-year-old defenseman from Brighton, topped all freshmen defenseman in goals, assists and points (7-14-21). The New Jersey Devils draft pick tied for the conference lead in scoring among defenseman with 19 points and all seven of his goals came in league action. Merrill also earned a bronze medal with the United States at the World Junior Championships during the season. He was named CCHA Rookie of the Week twice during his freshman campaign.

Kevin Kapalka, a 21-year-old goaltender from Mississauga, Ont., owned the league’s third-best save percentage at .928 to become an unanimous selection on the All-Rookie Team. Three of Kapalka’s eight league victories came in shutout fashion, and he also backstopped a league-leading five shootout wins. He was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week twice during the season, along with earning CCHA Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 7. He is just the second Lakers’ netminder to earn All-Rookie honors.
