Murray to be named new WMU coach

The Kalamazoo Gazette is reporting that former NHL coach Andy Murray will be named Western Michigan's new head coach.

WMU has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday at the Seelye Center to announce Murray's hiring.

It's expected that current assistant coaches Pat Ferschweiler and Rob Facca will remain under Murray.

The 60-year-old Murray, who reportedly turned down the head coaching job at Rensselaer in 2006, has 10 seasons of head coaching experience in the NHL with Los Angeles and St. Louis Blues and has also been an assistant in Philadelphia, Minnesota and Winnipeg.

Murray's only collegiate coaching experience came at Brandon University in Canada back in 1979.

The Gazette also reports Murray will receive a similar contract to the $275,000-per-year deal former head coach Jeff Blashill received in April.
