Northern Michigan names tri-captains

Senior forwards Justin Florek and Andrew Cherniwchan and junior defenseman Scott Macaulay have been named captains for Northern Michigan this season.

“These three guys have shown throughout their career that they have the ability to lead guys,” NMU head coach Walt Kyle said. “It’s important for us that our captains have the same value structure as the coaches and these guys really demonstrate that.”

Cherniwchan has appeared in 118 games in a ‘Cats uniform, tallying 63 points on 25 goals and 38 assists. Cherniwchan was awarded the Steve Weeks Unsung Hero Award last season.

Florek, a 2010 draft pick of the Boston Bruins and a Marquette native, has appeared in 120 games and tallied 81 points with 35 goals and 46 assists during his college career. At the end of last season, Florek was named the Gary Emmons Most Valuable Player, the Bill Joyce Best Forward, the Dallas Drake Defensive Player of the Year and was the recipient of the Clara Pantalone Memorial Community Service Award.

Macaulay has appeared in 68 games during his two-year career. He has one goal with 20 assists. Last season, Macaulay was awarded the Tom Laidlaw Best Defenseman and the Steve Bozek Plus/Minus Award.
