Michigan State took the ice at Munn Ice Arena this weekend and came up with three non-conference wins in beating and tying always-tough Minnesota.

Friday night, Kevin Walrod netted a pair of goals and the Spartans held on for a 4-3 win.

Brent Darnell and Matt Berry scored the others and Drew Palmisano stopped 40 shots between the pipes.

Minnesota Wild first-rounder Nick Bjugstad scored twice for the Gophers.

Saturday night, Daultan Leveille scored at 8:54 of the third period to give MSU the 4-4 tie.

Mike Merrifield, Matt Crandall and Brock Shelgren also scored for the Spartans and Palmisano made 35 saves in goal.

Greg Wolfe tacked on two assists for MSU, now 8-5-1 on the season.

Minnesota goes to 11-4-1 and was ranked No. 1 in the nation as recently as Nov. 14.

The Spartans host Bowling Green in a two-game CCHA series next weekend.
