Spartans one and done in NCAA tournament

Michigan State entered the NCAA tournament as the 15th seed and drew overall No. 2 seed Union in the first game of the East Regional in Bridgeport, Conn., Friday afternoon.

MSU played well, but suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Dutchmen, effectively ending the Spartans' 2011-12 season.

Will Yanakeff made 29 saves for Michigan State (19-16-4), while Matt Berry scored the lone goal for the Spartans on a second-period power play.

For Union, Hobey Baker finalist Troy Grosenick finished with 20 saves and Jeremy Welsh tallied a goal and an assist.

Union will play the winner of No. 5 Miami and No. 12 Massachusetts-Lowell matchup for the right to go to the Frozen Four in two weeks in Tampa, Fla.
