Miami knocks off Michigan in 2OT classic

The Midwest Regional between Miami and Michigan is underway in Fort Wayne.

With under a minute to go in the opening period, it's tied, 1-1. Pat Cannone (power play) scored for Miami at 12:07, while David Wohlberg replied 94 seconds later at 13:41.

Connor Knapp is in net for Miami and Shawn Hunwick for Michigan.

At the end of one, it's still Michigan 1, Miami 1.

The game is on ESPNU for those interested.

Midway through the second and it's now 2-all.

Chad Langlais with a PPG for Michigan and Cannone again for Miami.

Still 2-2 with 5:54 to go in the second period.

Miami on the power play at 18:27 - Wohlberg to the box for hitting Justin Vaive after the whistle. Vaive looked to dive, but the ref bought it.

Second intermission - still 2-all.

Third period under way.

At 4:09, Kevin Lynch put a shot on Knapp that didn't go in, but rested on the goal line and after a review, the right call was made - no goal. Steven Spinell hit Wohlberg after the whistle and we go to a Michigan power play.

Still 2-2 with 11:58 left in the third.

Crunch time - 7:30 to go and still a 2-2 game.

6:16 left - next goal wins it appears.

Trent Vogelhuber hits the post at 17:00 and Hunwick covers. Play gets reviewed and again, the right call is made. Miami is REALLY pressing right now.

Just under the two-minute warning. Penalty with 1:44 left to Brandon Smith - U of M power play.

Final minute...

Extra hockey down in Fort Wayne - off to overtime.

Puck loose, the whistle blows and Lynch should have the game-winner. Refs blew that one. Bad, bad call. Play is under review, though.

No goal - that's three reviewed calls tonight. Michigan on a power play, though.

Now the second ref is reviewing something. Come on, some of us work at 7:00 a.m.

15:14 to go - nail-biting time.

We're now 11:07 into OT and a couple chances from both sides, but still a tie game.

Matt Rust hits the post. Anyone get the feeling a garbage goal will win this?

Carl Hagelin with a shot and Knapp makes the save and covers - 3:22 to go. Knapp has 50 saves to this point.

Under two minutes left in OT.

Last minute left in the first OT.

Michigan ices the puck and a faceoff in the Michigan zone - 7.9 ticks left.

Heading to double overtime now. Good Lord. I'm getting no sleep tonight.

Michigan outshot Miami, 20-6, in the first overtime.

Ballgame! Miami scores 1:54 in on a goal by Alden Hirschfeld. A quick snapshot that beat Hunwick blocker side.

Look for the full recap in the morning - it's knocking on midnight. Knapp finished with 55 saves, though.

What a game, though. What a game. Kind of sucks someone had to lose. Michigan has nothing to be ashamed of. Not one thing.
