LSSU, Kapalka shutout Ferris State twice

By Bob Miller/Lake Superior State Beat Writer

What a difference a week can make!

After languishing near the bottom of the CCHA standings, victims of a very tough opening schdule, Lake Superior State took a mighty leap upward in those standings with a pair of home wins last weekend against 20th-ranked Ferris State. The two wins vaulted the Lakers into a sixth place tie with Ferris State in the conference run-down.

Great goaltending usually trumps all else in hockey and that's what the Lakers used to post the weekend victories, riding freshman goaltender Kevin Kalpalka's hot hand in net to shutout victories each night, 1-0 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday.

Kapalka stopped 63 shots in the series with nary a blemish on his record.

Junior defenseman Kyle Haines may have only had one assist aiding the Lake Superior offense, but his plus-1 rating and eight blocked shots over the two games certainly aided the Lakers' defensive cause and complemented Kapalka's perfect weekend.

Nick McParland's first period goal was the only score of the game on Friday.

Domenic Monardo scored two fo the Lakers four second period goals on Saturday to help ice a less nerve-wracking win in the weekend rematch.

Lake Superior heads back out onto the road this coming weekend with a pair of games with the CCHA's second-place team, Michigan, at storied Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor.
