Wayne State women smoked by Wisconsin powerhouse

Last weekend the Wayne State women started their season in not-so-grand fashion with 8-1 and 11-0 losses at Wisconsin.

Friday night, senior co-captain Jessica Snelgrove's first goal of the season made it a 2-1 deficit when she scored midway through the second period. But then the Badgers reeled off six unanswered goals on WSU goalies Tina Thibideau and Val Turcotte.

Thibideau turned aside 44 shots while giving up seven goals. Turcotte stopped one of the two shots she faced in 3:45 of action.

It was no different Saturday as Wisconsin put an 11-spot on the board. Wisconsin scored its first goal less than four minutes into the game when Molly Engstrom scored off a rebound. UW put two more past Turcotte as the Badgers increased their lead to 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

UW scored its fourth goal less than a minute into the second stanza. The Badgers added four more in the period.

Wisconsin scored three more past Thibideau in the third.

Wayne State (0-2) returns to action on Oct. 16 to begin a two-game road series against Boston College in Chesnut Hill, Mass.
