Spartans split at Showcase

Michigan State scored a 4-0 win at Wisconsin Friday night, but then were shutout themselves in a 5-0 loss the next night at Minnesota in the College Hockey Showcase.

Friday night, netminder Dominic Vicari made 28 saves for his ninth career shutout. Colton Fretter scored twice and added an assist on Drew Miller's goal. Senior captain Jim Slater rounded out the scoring for MSU and also chipped in with a pair of helpers.

"We played with composure," Michigan State head coach Rick Comley remarked. "It was an emotional win. We kept it simple. We were much smarter with the puck tonight and got some good goaltending."

Saturday night, Vicari and Matt Migliaccio combined to make 24 saves.

"Minnesota is a good team and on their ice, they are excellence," Comley said. "I thought the only chance that we had was to score first. We lost two players to injury last night (forward Mike Lalonde and defenseman Ethan Graham to knee injuries suffered at Wisconsin) and that really hurt us. This was two tough games on the road for us."

MSU gets back at it against Bowling Green in a home-and-home series this weekend. On Friday, the teams meet in East Lansing, while on Saturday, the series switches to Bowling Green, Ohio. Starting time is set for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
