Wildcats sign Kaunisto for '05

Northern Michigan announced that forward Ray Kaunisto has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend NMU and play hockey for the Wildcats next year.

"Ray is an outstanding addition to the program," NMU head coach Walt Kyle said. "We are elated to add him to the team."

Kaunisto is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound left wing currently playing for the Soo Indians in the North American Hockey League.

"Ray drew interest from both colleges and National Hockey League scouts for his play down the stretch (last spring)," Soo head coach Joe Shawhan said. "While the NHL Central Scouting Bureau, along with numerous teams were following goalie Derek MacIntyre (now at Ferris State), they kept asking about our 6-foot-3 youngster. He skates extremely well and likes the rough going. His potential is outstanding both at the college and professional level."

The Sault Ste. Marie native has appeared in 17 games this season with eight goals and two assists for 10 points.

"Ray comes from a great program in the Soo along with a great hockey family and is just beginning to reach his potential," Kyle added. "He has excellent size and is an excellent skater. Ray has a great work ethic and has the kind of character we want in the program."
