WMU goalie CCHA's best

Western Michigan freshman goaltender Daniel Bellissimo has been named Rookie of the Week by the CCHA. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound netminder helped the Broncos to a sweep (5-1, 3-1) over Alabama-Huntsville at Lawson Arena last weekend (Nov. 27-28).

Bellissimo stopped 65 of 67 shots in holding the nation’s top scoring team to just two goals on the weekend. He also derailed all 14 UAH power play opportunities — a unit that ranked second in the country in power play percentage (26.8%).

Bellissimo earned Perani Cup No. 2 Star of the Game honors both nights and registered his first point assisting on Mike Erickson’s power play goal in the series finale.

“Daniel has been solid in goal for us and we look for continual improvement from him,” said WMU head coach Jim Culhane. “He is making key saves and showing good poise between the pipes.”

Seven weeks into the season, Bellissimo’s goals-against average stands at a season-low 2.71 while his saves percentage has soared to .917. Bellissimo leads the CCHA with 363 saves and owns a winning record of 7-5-1, having started the last nine games.
