WMU splits opening games at home

By Matt Mackinder/Interim Western Michigan Beat Writer

Western Michigan opened their regular season this past weekend and beat defending CHA champion Niagara Friday night, but fell to RIT last night in a close game.

Chris Clackson scored two goals against Niagara and Max Campbell and Greg Squires also scored for the Broncos (1-1-0).

"What you see tonight is a pretty good testament of how these guys prepared in the off-season," said WMU head coach Jim Culhane. "Both teams should be pretty happy."

Riley Gill made 32 saves for Western Michigan.

Saturday night, RIT scored an early third-period goal to escape with a 2-1 win.

Ian Slater's first NCAA goal was all the Broncos could muster. Jerry Kuhn stopped 28 shots in defeat.

The Broncos head to Minnesota-Duluth next weekend for their first road trip of the season.
