The Lake Superior State Lakers extended their winless streak to seven games over the weekend, dropping a pair of one-goal games to the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. LSSU lost 3-2 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday.
Friday night, the Lakers offense came alive in the second period, when freshman Fred Cassiani scored to tie the game 1-1. Troy Schwab and Josh Sim assisted on Cassiani's goal.
Lake State would then take the lead when Schwab scored a goal of his own assisted by Rick Schofield and Chad Nehring. The Lakers would then surrender two goals in just under two minutes to be put behind for good 3-2.
In net, Brian Mahoney-Wilson (pictured) made 24 saves in the loss.
Saturday night, the Lakers would be dominate in outshooting UNO, 48-23, in the game.
Maverick goaltender Jerad Kaufmann made 47 saves, however, in leading his team to victory.
The Lakers finally solved Kaufmann in the third period when Cassiani scored his second on the weekend assisted by Kyle Haines. This was Haines' first collegiate assist.
UNO would score the game winner just minutes later on a shot that deflected off a broken stick on the ice.
Laker netminder Pat Inglis made his first start since suffering an ankle injury at Ferris State in November and made 21 saves in the loss.
The Lakers continued to struggle on the power play, going 0-for-11 on the weekend.
Lake State's next opponent will be Harvard in the first round of the Badger Showdown in Madison, Wis., on December 27.
