The Lake Superior State Lakers played tough over the weekend, losing to the No. 1-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 3-2 on Friday, and earning a 3-3 tie on Saturday.
Friday night, the Lakers earned a goal in each of the first two periods. First, Josh Sim scored on the power play assisted by Simon Gysbers and Troy Schwab.
In the second period, Will Acton found the back of the net with assists going to Steven Oleksey and Sim.
There was no scoring in the third period, as the Lakers failed to net the equalizer.
Brian Mahoney-Wilson was in net for LSSU, making 24 saves on the night.
On Saturday night, Lake State burst out to a 2-0 lead, but couldn't hold off the Irish offense.
Steve Kaunisto scored a shorthanded goal in the first to put the Lakers up 1-0. Chad Nehring then circled around the net and beat the Notre Dame netminder to put his team up 2-0. The Lakers gave up a late goal to end the first up 2-1.
The Irish outscored LSSU 2-1 in the second to secure the 3-3 tie.
Fred Cassiani scored the Laker goal in the second, assisted by Gysbers and Schwab.
Pat Inglis made 11 saves for the Lakers before he was replaced by Mahoney-Wilson, who made 21 saves to earn the tie.
Notre Dame won the shootout to earn the extra point in the CCHA standings.
The Lakers (6-10-8, 3-7-6-1 CCHA) travel to Bowling Green next weekend.
