NMU sweeps away Wisconsin

By Susannah Nichols/ Northern Michigan Beat Writer

Northern Michigan, after spending 2008 in the CCHA cellar, started 2009 with a bang and a thus-far perfect record after sweeping Wisconsin on the road with a 3-2 win on Friday and a 6-5 overtime victory on Saturday.

Mark Olver (pictured) was a major factor in Friday's game, netting two goals and picking up an assist. The Wildcats took some time getting started and found themselves behind 1-0 at the end of the first period. But it only took 38 seconds of the second period before the tide started to turn. Olver and Erik Gustafsson set up Gregor Hanson on the power play. Not a minute later, Olver put NMU ahead with some help from Mike Maltese.

Midway through the second period, Wisconsin knotted up the game on a shorthanded marker. But Olver and Maltese connected again early in the third to put the 'Cats ahead for good.

Justin Florek also earned an assist on Olver's second goal and Wildcats netminder Derek Janzen finished with 33 saves.

Saturday's game was a true test of mettle for the Wildcats, particularly when they found themselves down 5-2 entering the final period of play. Special teams had been both a blessing and a curse for NMU as they gave up three Wisconsin power-play goals early on, but also scored on their own power play thanks to Nick Sirota (assists by Hanson and Gustafsson). Hanson and Gustafsson also set up Tim Hartung for a 'Cats goal early in the game, but it was Florek who would lead the comeback charge for his team in the final third of the game.

Midway through the third period, Florek scored twice, his goals less than five minutes apart, to draw his team within one. With less than two minutes remaining, the Wilcats went on the power play. Tyler Gron and Ben Lindemulder set up Jared Brown, who lit the lamp to tie the game and send the 'Cats to overtime.

Fox's energy didn't waver in the extra period. Two minutes in, he set up Phil Fox, who banged in the goal to cap NMU's inspired comeback.

Janzen finished with 28 saves in Saturday's game.

NMU (5-12-3, 2-9-3 CCHA) remains on the road next weekend when they take on Nebraska-Omaha.

Bulldogs place third in Catamount Cup

By Tom Morelli/Ferris State Beat Writer

Ferris State began the New Year out on in Burlington, Vermont, and returned with a modest gain after last weekend’s third-place showing at the 13th annual Catamount Cup.

In Friday’s game against St. Lawrence University, the Bulldogs were in a rut leading up to the midway point of the second period. The Saints had their offense clicking, as they scored four goals off 12 shots on Ferris State goaltender Pat Nagle.

The Bulldogs however, did not go down easy, as winger Casey Haines notched his fourth goal of the campaign, courtesy of defenseman Matt Case with 9:21 gone by in the period.

Ferris State head coach Bob Daniels made a crucial decision in the third period by pulling Nagle in favor of freshman Taylor Nelson, which turned out to be the spark his team needed. After the Bulldogs yielded a power-play goal by St. Lawrence five minutes into the stanza, they responded with some scoring of their own. Forwards Derek Graham and Justin Menke both lit the lamp on the man-advantage to bring Ferris State within two.

In the final minute of the third, Daniels took a gamble by replacing Nelson for an extra attacker. Fortunately, this move also proved successful as center Aaron Lewicki beat netminder Alex Petizian with 41 seconds left, thanks to some help from Case and Menke.

However, the Bulldogs could not score the equalizer in the game’s waning moments, and fell short of their comeback in a 5-4 loss.

Nagle and Nelson combined for 27 saves, compared to Petizian’s 30.

The roles were reversed in the consolation game, as Ferris State ended-up in the driver’s seat this time around, only to deal with a strong push by Colgate to force overtime.

For the second time in as many nights, Haines was the first Bulldog to score, this time on a set-up by Corey Couturier and Zach Redmond on the power-play just two minutes into the game.

At the 7:40 mark, Ferris State added an insurance goal when Case and Redmond fed the puck to Graham for another power-play conversion.

The Bulldogs’ 2-0 margin quickly dissipated toward the end of the first period, thanks to a sudden offensive surge by the Raiders’ David McIntyre. After scoring at the 18:47 mark, McIntyre slid the puck past Nagle again 49 seconds later to draw even.

Ferris State regained the lead at 4:59 in the second off a goal by sophomore Mike Embach, only to have Colgate’s Francois Brisebois answer back 10 minutes later.

Since neither team could score in overtime, both teams skated to a 3-3 tie. However, because this was a tournament, a shootout was needed to determine the third-place winner.

In the first round, both teams converted, with Peter Bogdanich scoring for the Raiders and Blair Riley for the Bulldogs.

Following a scoreless second round and a missed opportunity for McIntyre in the third, it came down to one final shot for Ferris State. With the pressure on, Lewicki beat goaltender Alex Evin by going glove-side, thus earning the Bulldogs their finish.

Nagle held a slight advantage in saves over Evin, 32-31, and is now 5-6-2 this season as a starter.

The Bulldogs (9-9-4 overall) return to their conference schedule this Friday and Saturday night with a home-and-home series against Western Michigan.

Broncos tie, lose at Dodge Classic

By Karl Henkel/Western Michigan Beat Writer

Western Michigan started off 2009 in similar fashion to the way most of 2008 went — with a loss.

The Broncos dropped the opening game of the Dodge Holiday Classic at Mariucci Arena to Northeastern, 3-1, on Friday.

Ryan Watson scored the lone goal for WMU to cut the Northeastern lead to 2-1, but a late goal prevented any further comeback for the Broncos.

Riley Gill made 37 stops and it was the fifth time this season he has eclipsed the 30-save mark. Brad Theissen had 23 for Northeastern (12-3-2).

In the third-place game on Saturday, WMU came out with a better result, tying Brown, 1-1.

Greg Squires scored his third goal of the season on a power play late in the second period for the Broncos.

Mike Stuart responded with a goal with the man-advantage midway through the third period for Brown, but after that, neither team could muster another tally.

Jerry Kuhn got the call in net for WMU and made 32 stops. Mike Clemente had 43 saves for Brown (1-9-3).

Western Michigan (3-12-5, 2-8-4-1 CCHA) will play a home-and-home with Ferris State (9-9-4, 6-6-2-0 CCHA) Jan. 9 and 10. Friday’s matchup, in Big Rapids, will start at 7 p.m. Saturday’s finale will be in Kalamazoo and begins at 7:30 p.m.

MSU splits with tough Alaska squad

By Matt Mackinder/Michigan State Beat Writer

Michigan State got back in the win column this weekend with a much-needed 2-1 win Friday night at home over the Alaska Nanooks, but failed to finish the job as Alaska took a 3-1 win last night.

Friday night, the Spartans (6-13-3, 3-9-2-2 CCHA) got their first conference win since October.

After Joe Sova scored 2:45 into the first period for Alaska Friday night, the game remained 1-0 until late in the third period.

Daultan Leveille, with help from Dustin Gazley, scored a power-play goal to tie the score with 5:35 left in the third period and the just 1:26 later, Leveille assisted Gazley on the game-winner.

Jeff Lerg made 35 saves to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Saturday night, Andrew Conboy (pictured) netted MSU's lone tally and Lerg made 29 stops.

"What haunts us continues to haunt us," Michigan State head coach Rick Comley said. "For a lot of the game, we played OK. In the first period, I thought we played very, very well. The second period was kind of neutral, we didn't give up much. The inability to score just continues to haunt us and it makes it really tough."

The Spartans are idle next weekend before playing at Miami Jan. 16-17.

Warriors grab 3 points at Easton Classic

By Tom Balog / Wayne State Beat Writer

The tenth-ranked Wayne State Warriors (13-3-2, 4-0-0 CHA) opened the New Year on a high note, dumping the St. Cloud State Huskies, 3-2, in the opening game of the Easton Showcase on Friday night.

The Green and Gold bolted out to a 3-0 lead by the 3:16 mark of the second period on goals by Chelsea Burnett, Veronique Laramee-Paquette, and Melissa Boal’s team-leading 17th goal of the season.

The Huskies add a pair of goals by Holly Roberts and Caitlin Hogan before the second period was done to close the gap to one.

Lindsey Park (pictured) shut the door from there, stopping 14 shots in the third period to preserve the Warrior’s 10th win in their last 11 games. Park finished the night with a season-high 33 saves and improved her personal record to 5-1-1.

Blueliner Natalie Payne racked up two assists for her fourth multiple-point game of the year.

The Warriors fought from behind on Saturday and tied the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, 3-3, in the finale of the Easton Classic.

Micheline Frappier notched a pair of markers for WSU and Payne added a goal and assist.

Alyssa Wiebe led the Sioux with two goals and an assist.

Lindsey Park started between the pipes again and stopped 30 shots to keep the Warriors unbeaten in their last five contests.

The Warriors remain winless (0-7-2) all-time in nine meetings with the Fighting Sioux.

Wayne State will take next weekend off before hosting Robert Morris for a series Jan. 16-17 at the City Sports Center in Detroit.
