LSSU takes four of six from Nanooks

By Bob Miller/Lake Superior State Beat Writer

Moving up the CCHA ranks and threatening to gain position for a first-round playoff bye, Lake Superior State took four out of a possible six points in a home two-game set with Alaska this past weekend.

After a shootout loss on Friday night to the Nanooks, the Lakers scored two late goals to ice a Saturday night win and gain a three-way tie with Alaska and Northen Michigan for sixth spot in the CCHA standings. The top five teams in the standings receive that first-round pass.

Third period heroics highlighted both games for Lake Superior.

Chad Nehring tied the Friday night contest, 2-2, at 2:39 of the final period, but neither team could find scoring range after that.

On Saturday, Will Acton's unassisted goal with under two minutes left in regulation time proved the difference in a 4-2 Lake Superior winning performance. Dillin Stonehouse added an empty-net goal.

Kevin Kapalka's 30-save performance was key in the win.

The Lakers head to Columbus this coming weekend for a road pair against Ohio State in their quest for better playoff positioning.
