Team USA goaltender John Gibson has committed to play collegiate hockey at the University of Michigan following his USHL career.
"I chose the University of Michigan because it is a great program with a storied hockey history," said Gibson. "It also provides me with a great opportunity to play as a freshman. I'm hopeful that I can be a part of a team that will compete each year for a national championship."
Gibson has compiled a 2-3-2 record in eight USHL games this season. It is his second season in the USHL after appearing in 18 games for Team USA's Under-17 squad in 2009-10. The 17-year-old from Pittsburgh was listed as the top USHL goaltender by NHL Central Scouting when they released their preliminary rankings of draft-eligible prospects in November.
Three other current USHL players are committed to attend Michigan: Team USA defenseman Connor Carrick, Des Moines Buccaneers forward Justin Selman and Waterloo Black Hawks forward Alex Guptill.
Thirteen USHL alumni are currently playing for the Wolverines this season: Mac Bennett (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Kevin Clare (Team USA), Derek Deblois (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Jacob Fallon (Indiana Ice/Team USA), Bryan Hogan (Lincoln Stars), Adam Janecyk (Sioux City Musketeers), Chad Langlais (Lincoln Stars), Tristin Llewellyn (Tri-City Storm/Indiana Ice), Jon Merrill (Team USA), Luke Moffatt (Team USA), Lee Moffie (Waterloo Black Hawks), Greg Pateryn (Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets) and Jeff Rohrkemper (Sioux Falls Stampede).
