Three Michigan teams in latest USCHO poll

Ferris State kick off the New Year at number 3 in the latest USCHO Division I Men's hockey poll.

The WCHA leading Bulldogs are 15-3-3 on the season and are coming off a 3-0 loss to Colgate in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis.

Also cracking the Top-20, the Michigan Wolverines rank eighth and the Lake Superior State Lakers roll in at number nineteen.

In the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, the Adrian Bulldogs remain unbeaten at 12-0-1 and climb into the number one spot for the first time in school history.

Wolverines and Bulldogs Rank 3-4

The Michigan Wolverines were off of game action all week, but hold onto the #3 spot in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll for the third week in a row. 

In the in-state battle of ranked teams, Ferris State went on the road to the Taffy Abel Arena in the Sault and swept Lake Superior.

The Bulldogs scored four first period goals on Friday and dropped the Lakers, 5-3.

FSU exploded for another pair in the opening period on Saturday and held off the Lakers, 3-1, to move to 13-2-2 on the year and move up two spots to #4.

LSSU falls three spots to #17 with a record of 9-6-1.  

In the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, Adrian went into the week as #3 and grabbed 3 of 4 points on the road at Marian. The Bulldogs are now 10-0-1 overall on the year.

Michigan at No. 3 in latest USCHO Poll

The Michigan Wolverines had a light week, but still hold down the third spot in the latest USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll.

Andrew Copp notched the game-winner for the the Maize and Blue (9-2-1) at 3:38 of OT at Yost on Friday night to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes in their only game action of the week.

The Ferris State Bulldogs (11-2-2) grabbed three of four points over the weekend from the Northern Michigan Wildcats on the road at the Berry Events Center and hold steady in sixth place.

Lake Superior also cracks the top-20 with an overall record of 9-4-1.

The 14th ranked Lakers celebrated Thanksgiving with a pair of 4-3 victories over the Bowling Green Falcons at the Taffy Abel Arena.

In the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, the Adrian Bulldogs are ranked third with a perfect 9-0-0 record.

CCHA honors former players with All-Decade Team

Continuing to ‘Celebrate The Legacy’ in its’ 42nd and final season, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has released the All-Decade Team for 2000-13 to honor the league’s top performers from the past 13 years.

 

The illustrious group of 12 players, selected by a committee of coaches, administrators and media, joins the league’s All-Decade teams from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s that were selected in 2001.

All 12 players selected to the CCHA 2000-13 All-Decade Team were All-Americans (six multiple All-Americans) and graduated to professional careers. Eleven played in the National Hockey League (NHL), Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller (pictured) blossomed into an NHL All-Star and U.S. Olympian, while Ferris State forward Chris Kunitz has captured the Stanley Cup with both Anaheim and Pittsburgh.

 

The CCHA 2000-13 All-Decade Team was chosen from a pool of Hobey Baker Award winners and All-Americans that played at least three years of college hockey. The selections were made by a committee of coaches, administrators and media that have been involved with the league for the better part of the last three decades.

 

Below is the team in alphabetical order by position with their overall career totals. Miller won the 2002 Hobey Baker Award and was a two-time CCHA Player of the Year and two-time Goaltender of the Year. Other Hobey Baker Award winners on the All-Decade Team include Michigan forward Kevin Porter (2008) and Miami forward Andy Miele (2011).

Wildcats beat, tie Wolverines

The #17 Northern Michigan Wildcats welcomed the top-ranked Michigan Wolverines to Marquette this weekend and dealt them a 5-3 loss on Friday. The teams fought to a 3-3 tie on Saturday.

Northern outshot Michigan 13-7 in the first period of Friday's game, and the teams were even at 10 shots apiece through the second.

But the penalties were the real story: Wildcat Andrew Cherniwchan and Wolverine Luke Moffatt were slapped with major penalties and game disqualifications after Cherniwchan slid into Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick. Hunwick was also given a five-minute major and game misconduct, and Wildcat Reed Seckel got a double-minor for boarding.

Adam Janecyk replaced Hunwick after his penalty, and the scoring took off for both teams. Dylan Walchuk put the Wildcats on the board with his first collegiate goal, and Lindsay Sparks answered less than a minute later for the Wolverines. Matt Thurber also netted his first Wildcat goal to give Northern a 2-1 lead heading into the last twenty minutes.

Mitch Jones kept up the Northern trend by scoring his first collegiate goal early in the third period. Zack Hyman and Travis Lynch answered for the Wolverines to tie up the score.

Tyler Gron scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats, and Justin Florek, who had already racked up two assists on the night, scored an empty-net goal to finalize the score at 5-3.

Hunwick had 17 saves before exiting the game; Janecyk had 10 saves for the loss. In net for the 'Cats, Reid Ellingson had 24 saves for the win.

On Saturday, Michigan controlled play in the first period: they outshot the 'Cats 12-4 and scored twice, courtesy of an AJ Treais even-strength goal and a power-play goal by Sparks.

Gron responded in the second period with a pair of power-play goals. Kevin Lynch wrenched the lead back for the Wolverines heading into the second intermission.

Jones scored his second goal of the series less than a minute into the third period, and neither team could get ahead before the end of regulation.

In the last minute of the period, Seckel received a major penalty and game disqualification, which put the Wildcats behind the eight-ball for nearly the entire overtime period. They managed two shots to Michigan's three, but neither team could convert.

Treais scored the only goal in the shootout to give Michigan the shootout win.

Hunwick finished with 23 saves; Wildcat Jared Coreau finished with 25.

NMU (4-1-1, 1-0-1 CCHA) goes on the road to take on Western Michigan next weekend. Michigan (4-1-1, 0-1-0-1, CCHA) returns to Ann Arbor to face Ferris State in a Thursday-Friday series.

Michigan heading back to Frozen Four

Exactly eight days after laying a huge pre-Easter egg against Western Michigan in the CCHA playoff semifinals, Michigan played arguably the best game of their season, defeating Colorado College, 2-1, in the NCAA West Regional final in St. Louis.

The win earned the Wolverines a berth in the Frozen Four semifinals on April 7 in St. Paul, Minnesota, against the winner of Sunday's NCAA regional tussle between Denver and North Dakota.

Despite the slim one-goal margin, Michigan play dominantly offensively and nearly completely shut down Colorado College's freshman phenom, Jaden Schwartz.

"Obviously this was great, but this was about our team and the University of Michigan," said Red Berenson, referring to his NHL playing and coaching days in St. Louis. "My history is really irrelevant in terms of this building. We just wanted to get through the first game. For Colorado College to score like they did last night against arguably the best team in college hockey, might have put the fear of God in our team and made us play better out of respect. It's a good win for Michigan.

"I think we were prepared tonight. I talked to Coach (Billy) Powers and he looked at video and did a good job preparing our penalty killers. When they did get shots Shawn (Hunwick) was there. As much as we survived it, I thought we did a much better job on the PK than we did last time we played them over the Christmas break.

"I can't tell you that we tried to play any differently than we normally play, but I can tell you that I wasn't the only one to watch the game. All the players watched it on television back in the hotel and when you watch a game like that you really get a sense of respect for a team that you may not have gotten otherwise. The way that team went was just remarkable. I will say that when you score that many goals on one night, you can't buy one the next night and that's what happened tonight."

Scooter Vaughan (pictured), who showed his flexibility in a number of roles during the game, opened the scoring for Michigan barely two minutes into the game. Defenseman Lee Moffie had the other Wolverine goal to build a 2-0 lead.

Michigan then played strongly on offense, defense and special teams, narrowly failing to convert numerous scoring chances.

"It was a 2 on 4," said Vaughan, starting to describe his opening goal. "I really didn't notice it was that way. I knew my man was a little flat-footed. I just used my speed and got by him and got a good shot off above his glove.

"We knew that (Colorado College) are a good team. The line of the Schwartz brothers and Shultz we knew we had to shut them down and get on the boards. We got on them early and we had some great goalkeeping."

Shawn Hunwick provided that goaltending, holding the Tigers off the board until late in the third period, including the duration of a key penalty kill in the game's closing moments.

"I think they did have a few pretty good shots early on, but this is an opportunity to play for the Frozen Four," Hunwick pointed out. "I think I made a couple good saves. It's pretty easy to stay in the game when you're playing to go to the Frozen Four. They didn't really get anything going too much until they got into the power play. Once they got into the power play, I really had to be sharp."

"I say it all the time; I'm still shell-shocked," continued Hunwick. "I can't believe I'm playing hockey for Michigan. I'm so happy that Coach (Berenson) gave me the opportunity to come here and play for Michigan. To go back to the Frozen Four twice is something that my brother (Matt, who played defense for Michigan) was never able to do, even once, which is nice for me, but I'll give him a call tonight and remind him of that. I got texts tonight from guys who've played in the past. We're just happy that we can go back not only for us, but for our program and future players. It's a great tool for recruiting; I can't wait to be there."

Hunwick WILL be there on April 7 with the rest of his Wolverine teammates.

Wolverines advance; Broncos skate home

The Michigan Wolverines move on to their 24th Frozen Four appearance after getting past the Colorado College Tigers, 2-1, at the Scott Trade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday night.

Scooter Vaughan and Lee Moffie scored first period markers and Shawn Hunwick made 21 saves for the Maize and Blue.

Michigan will face the winner of the Denver-North Dakota game at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on Thursday evening.

The Western Michigan Broncos closed a stunning season with a heartbreaking, 3-2, double-overtime loss to the Denver Pioneers at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Broncos squandered a 2-0 lead on goals by Derek Roehl and Trevor Elias and Jerry Kuhn made 35 saves in his final collegiate game.

Michigan sweeps away Northern

In the last regular-season series for both teams, Michigan defeated Northern Michigan twice on the 'Cats' home ice: the Wolverines delivered a 3-2 win on Friday and a 5-0 drubbing on Saturday.

On Friday, Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Mac Bennett and David Wohlberg.

Jake Johnson scored his first of the season to bring the 'Cats within one, but the Wolverines took their two-goal lead into the second intermission after Chris Brown lit the lamp.

Andrew Cherniwchan scored for Northern early in the third, but Michigan dug in their heels to preserve the lead, killing off two Northern power plays in the last fifteen minutes.

Shots were even at 23 for both teams: Shawn Hunwick had 21 saves for the Michigan win; Reid Ellingson recorded 20 for Northern's loss.

Saturday's game was all Blue: Carl Hagelin led the offensive charge with two goals (including one on the power play) and an assist. Matt Rust also had a banner game with two assists and a shorthanded goal.

Luke Glendening and Wohlberg each added a goal, and Scooter Vaughn and John Merrill each contributed a pair of assists.

Michigan outshot Northern 33-16. Hunwick made 13 saves, and Bryan Hogan, who entered the game with six minutes left, made an additional three. Ellingson had 17 saves before being replaced by Jared Coreau, who stopped all of the 11 shots he faced.

The Wolverines (23-9-4, 20-7-1-0 CCHA) headed back to the lower peninsula with the CCHA title in hand and a top-seed ranking heading into the tournament. The 'Cats (14-17-5, 12-13-3-0 CCHA) finish sixth in the conference and will host Bowling Green in the first round of conference playoffs.

Wolverines grab four points over FSU

No. 4 ranked Michigan finished strong in their series against Ferris State over the weekend, winning 3-2 at Yost Arena on Saturday after losing a shootout in Big Rapids the night before.

Action in Friday's game didn't pick up until late, as Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead going into the final period. Ferris State increased their lead at the midway point of the frame, when captain Zach Redmond took a pass from Chad Billins and blasted a shot past goaltender Shawn Hunwick from just inside the left faceoff circle.

The Wolverines would answer back a little over a minute later, as Jacob Fallon notched his first marker of the campaign by bouncing the puck off a Ferris State player and into the net. Looking for the equalizer, U-M head coach Red Berenson pulled Hunwick in the final minute of the game in favor of an extra attacker. With 13 seconds remaining, the Wolverines were able to force overtime, courtesy of David Wohlberg.

After a scoreless overtime, both teams went to a shootout to decide a winner. The Bulldogs went first, as Redmond lit the lamp with a five-hole shot. Forward Carl Hagelin's attempt to give U-M the equalizer was denied by netminder Pat Nagle. Ferris State's Derek Graham and the Wolverines' Louie Caporusso participated in the second round, but neither were able to connect. Billins proceeded to give the Bulldogs' a shootout win with a backhand shot from the right side of the crease.

Nagle tallied his fourth win of the season with 28 stops, while Hunwick finished with 26.

Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the following game, with forwards Scooter Vaughan and Kevin Lynch both scoring midway through the opening stanza.

At the beginning of the second period, sophomore Kyle Bonis helped cut that lead in half by finishing off a one-timer from Travis Ouellette while on the man-advantage.

The Wolverines answered back with 6:18 elapsed, as Hagelin's shot toward the net took a bad bounce off a Bulldogs' skater.

Toward the end of the frame, Ferris State's Andy Huff tallied his first collegiate goal by knocking in a rebound from just outside the crease.

Nagle held a slight advantage in saves over Bryan Hogan, 23-22.

Michigan (4-1-3 overall, 3-0-1-2 CCHA) hits the road this weekend for a two-game set against Alaska. Both contests are slated to begin at 11:05 PM Eastern Time/7:05 PM Alaskan Time.

The Bulldogs (4-3-1 overall, 1-2-1-1 CCHA) play host to No. 1 ranked Miami University on November 5-6 with puck-drop scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Red gets No. 700 as Wolverines sweep

Michigan head coach Red Berenson would probably have been just as happy to have the focus on his Wolverines' pair of road victories over Bowling Green this weekend.

History stepped in, though, and deemed that the overriding story was that the Michigan victory provided the Wolverine's esteemed mentor the 700th win in his Michigan coaching career.

Matt Rust, David Wohlberg, Kevin Lynch and Carl Hagelin all lit the lamp in the Michigan Friday night 4-1 win that earned Berenson the milestone victory.

Goaltender Shawn Hunwick stopped 17 of the 18 shots that the Falcons fired his way to backstop the win.

Berenson was typically low-key in his analysis of the win.

“We got the lead and we didn't give up much,” said the Michigan coach. “When you only give up one goal, you have a chance to win."

On Saturday night, Berenson's Wolverines gave up two goals, but again scored four of their own to complete the two-game weekend sweep of the Falcons.

Bryan Hogan tended the Wolverine net in the two-goaltender system Michigan is using at the outset of the '10-'11 season and nearly matched Hunwick's Friday performance with 16 saves on the night.

"I thought he battled hard,” said Berenson of the senior netminder. “Certainly with all the penalties that were called...I can't tell you how many minutes we killed tonight, but it had to be well over 15 minutes for the game. Hogan had to be one of our best penalty killers."

Louie Caporusso was the offensive star for Michigan with a shorthanded goal and two assists.

Freshman defenseman Jon Merrill chipped in his first career goal and Brandon Burlon and Wohlberg completed the Wolverine scoring.

The two victories gave Michigan an early leg up on the rest of the CCHA in the league standings, most of whom haven't entered the conference part of their schedule.

Michigan hosts the USNTDP Under-18 team Tuesday night in an exhibition scrap before heading east to challenge New Hampshire Saturday night in a battle of highly-ranked teams.

CCHA alums seek pro titles, awards

Playoff Success -- Three Michigan college hockey alums will be competing in the Calder Cup Finals for the American Hockey League title and two others have helped their teams secure titles in minor pro leagues during the playoff season.

Former Ferris State Bulldogs Greg Rallo and Cody Chupp and MSU Spartans Ethan Graham and Andrew Hutchinson helped the Texas Stars advanced out of the Western Conference by defeating the Hamilton Bulldogs in a seven-game series.

The Fort Wayne Komets won their third straight Turner Cup in the International Hockey League with the help of Fort Wayne native and Spartan alum Brandon Warner.

Bulldog alum Gio Flamminio is also a member of the President’s Cup-winning Rapid City Rush of the Central Hockey League.

Next Up? Stanley Cup-- Michigan State’s Duncan Keith and Michigan’s John Madden will be attempting to help the Chicago Blackhawks capture their first Stanley Cup title since 1961.

Keith, an alternate captain and finalist for the Norris Trophy, has been a force on the Blackhawk blue line, notching a goal and nine assists, as well as a plus-3 rating. Keith is also third among all skaters in time-on-ice per game at 27:52.

Madden is seeking his third Stanley Cup ring, having won with the New Jersey Devils in 2000 and 2003. The former Wolverine and penalty-kill specialist has played in all 16 games of the playoffs for the Blackhawks.

Award Time-- Michigan State alums Ryan Miller and Duncan Keith and former Michigan Wolverine Jed Ortmeyer have been named finalists for NHL awards.

Miller, who set the NCAA shutout record of 26 in his three seasons at Michigan State, is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, awarded for outstanding goaltender.

Miller finished second in the league in goals-against average (2.22) and save percentage (.929), and fourth in wins (41). Miller also led the Buffalo Sabres to a Northeast Division title.

Keith finished second among all NHL defensemen in points (69) and assists (55) and had a plus-21. rating.

Ortmeyer, of the Pacific Division champion San Jose Sharks, is a finalist for the Masterton Trophy which is awarded to the player "who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." A former captain of the Wolverines, during his professional career Ortmeyer has suffered a pulmonary embolism, a torn ACL and blood clots in his leg. This season, Ortmeyer played in 76 games, registering eight goals and 11 assists.

The 2010 NHL Awards will take place June 23 in Las Vegas.

Wolverines 'unacceptable' against Miami

It was a battle of two national and CCHA powerhouses last weekend and the top-ranked Miami RedHawks showed why they're atop the national polls by taking both from the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan managed just two goals all weekend, losing by scores of 3-1 Friday night and 5-1 Saturday night.

"We're giving up goals too easily and they are so hard to come by," noted U of M head coach Red Berenson.

Saturday night, David Wohlberg (pictured) staked the Wolverines to an early 1-0 lead before Miami stormed back with five unanswered tallies.

"There is not much you can say," Michigan senior captain Chris Summers said. "The outcome of the game says everything. It's a tough loss and a tough game to play in. We didn't show up to play."

Bryan Hogan finished with 24 saves for Michigan in a game that featured 34 total penalties for 95 minutes as the rivals recorded a combined 147 PIMs over the weekend series.

"[The puck] was like a hot potato tonight," added Berenson. "I can tell you that this is the worst game of our season. We have played eight games and this is by far our worst game. It was like we were skating in sand. I don't know whether it was preparation, I don't know if it was distractions, I don't know, but that's what it was. It wasn't just one player. I go around the locker room at the end of the game. When we win, I have a hard time finding someone who didn't have a good game. When we lose, I have a hard time finding someone who did have a good game. That was a fact tonight.

"Our team really has to refocus and rethink their commitment to this team and what they're going to do to help the team. We need to regroup on Monday and get back to work because this was unacceptable."

In Friday night's game, Chris Brown was the lone goal-scorer and Hogan made just 10 saves.

"I didn't know if the whistle blew or not so I put it in anyway," said Brown describing his goal. "It was a good power-play shift by my line: Louie [Caporusso] and Carl [Hagelin] and our defensive pairing Chad [Langlais] and [Steve] Kampfer. We just cycled the puck well and Carl put the puck toward the net. We started whacking at it and the ref let the puck go. It was sitting on the goal line and it was an easy one so I tapped it in. It was a big goal and we just have to make sure we capitalize on the power play from here on out."

Miami also became the first team to sweep Michigan in Ann Arbor in more than eight years since Northern Michigan did it back on Oct. 26-27, 2001.

The Wolverines (4-4-0 overall, 2-2-0 CCHA) now gear up for a home-and-home series with Michigan State starting Friday night at home and finishing Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.
