Warrior women swept by Bemidji State

The Wayne State women dropped a pair at home last weekend to Bemidji State at the City Sports Arena. The Beavers took a 4-1 win Friday and squeaked by with a 2-1 victory the next afternoon.

Friday evening, The Beavers grabbed a 1-0 lead just 3:52 into the contest when freshman defenseman Haley Balcom's shot beat WSU netminder Tina Thibideau. Wayne State (5-8-3) scored the equalizer at the 19:09 mark as freshman defenseman Danielle Wilson intercepted a pass at the WSU blueline, skated up ice and around a BSU skater at its blueline and deked BSU goalie Jill Luebke for her first collegiate goal.

BSU's Aimee Collins completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 59 seconds remaining in the contest.

Luebke finished with 22 saves, while Thibideau was credited with 20 stops.

Saturday, the Warriors went ahead 1-0 just 4:29 into the contest as senior center and co-captain Kelly Zamora blasted a shot from the right face-off dot past Beaver netminder Emily Brookshaw. Freshman wing Kristy Leng and sophomore wing Laura Monk assisted on Zamora's seventh of the campaign.

But WSU couldn't hold the lead and fell, 2-1.

Freshman netminder Val Turcotte finished the contest with 18 saves, while Brookshaw was credited with 15 saves.

Wayne State concludes its pre-holiday schedule this weekend with a two-game non-league series at sixth-ranked St. Lawrence.
