Ferris State and Western each take one

Recap by Bob Hendrickson

The Ferris State Bulldogs' bid for a seventh straight win in their series with the Western Michigan Broncos fell short Saturday night as the Broncos skated to a 5-3 win at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 after the first period and never got closer than one goal as the Broncos tallied two more in the second period. Ferris got goals from forwards Matt Frank and Adam Miller, and a late third-period goal from defenseman Joe Van Culin, but an empty-netter by the Broncos' Paul Szczechura put the game out of reach.

Goals by freshmen Casey Haines and Cody Chupp led the Bulldogs to a 2-1 win in the first game of the home and home series Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo.

Haines scored at the 4:22 mark of the first period and Chupp at 5:48 of the second period with sophomore J. T. Dahlinger assisting on both goals to spot the Bulldogs a two-goal lead. Western cut the deficit to one on a Chris Frank goal at 14:23 of the second, but the closely-played third period was scoreless.

Ferris State goaltender Mitch O'Keefe stopped 25 of 26 shots on the night, while Dan Bellissimo saved 24 shots for WMU.

Ferris State (3-3-0, 1-1-0 CCHA) heads for Alaska this coming weekend to take on the Nanooks before beginning a four-game November stretch against Michigan State and Michigan.

Western Michigan (2-2-0, 2-2-0 CCHA) will travel to the Qwest Center for a pair of games against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.
