Ohio State beats, ties Western Michigan

By Karl Henkel/Western Michigan Beat Writer

Even after the announcement that coach Jim Culhane will not be back next season, Western Michigan couldn’t change its losing ways, falling to Ohio State, 3-1, before drawing a 3-3 tie over the weekend.

In the opener, Max Campbell’s late goal spoiled OSU goalie Dustin Carlson’s shutout bid and temporarily put a scare into OSU, which led 2-1 after his goal.

But an empty-net goal by Zac Dalpe with less than a minute to play capped the Ohio State victory.

Carlson made 33 stops. Riley Gill stopped 32 for Western Michigan.

In the second game, the Broncos led by one goal on three different occasions, but couldn’t hold onto a lead. The Buckeyes scored their third and final goal with 1:36 remaining.

Cam Watson and Jared Katz netted even-strength goals for WMU, while Campbell scored a power-play goal.

Carlson and Gill each made 34 stops, with five of Gill’s coming in the extra session. Ohio State won, 1-0, in the shootout.

Western Michigan is winless in two weekends (three losses and a tie) since sweeping Notre Dame the first weekend in February.

The Broncos (8-18-6, 4-17-5-1 CCHA) travel to Big Rapids to face Ferris State (19-11-4, 13-9-4-3 CCHA) in the first game of a home-and-home series to conclude the regular seaspn. Friday’s game is at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday’s game back in Kalamazoo is at 7:35 p.m.
